Well Mark I think the info you are reporting is very helpful, if people are scared that is their issue, you can't pick and choose how to word everything incase anyone is scared, as far as I can see you have printed factual info, the stocking up thing I skimmed over as should those not interested in that yet.
I can see this having a huge efect on my work, especially since the production of swine flu jabs means a reduction in general flu vaccs, so there will be panic come winter. This does have potential to hit many areas we need to have a normal day to day life, but I won't go into that.
I feel I am front line, patients are going to come in and ask me, the workload it will create means less time spent on other duties etc.
Carry on posting I say, it is important

How will we know if we have swine flu and not just your common flu or a very bad cold?

being aware of whether you have come into contact with someone who has just returned from the affected areas, soon it will be too complicated to trace but this early its a bit easier to trace. If you have symptoms you stay home and call nhs 24 and get advice from them, they will be able to advise whether you need anti virals or not, based on your history.
I get people all the time coming into the surgery saying they are 'loaded with the flu' but NO if you have flu you feel so crap it is a struggle getting out of bed, what they really have is a bad dose of the common cold.

thing is Mark, I'm not worried about you wanting to inform us about the swine flu but you did imply we should stock up on food etc. and some of your stats where wrong

I appreciate what you are doing, but I do wonder if you are far more worried than the majority about this possible pandemic.

I know it's potentially lethal, I know it's spreading quickly, but as the Ben Goldacre article I posted says, no-one is really sure how bad it will be, or not be.

Don't stop posting, but maybe ease off on the doomsayer approach.

Oh and while I'm on the subject, wlkinsons has far cheaper wind up torches (£3.99) and tesco has £5 wind up radios.

once we hit level 6, you will see a gradual shut down of non-essential services, this will include shops, factories, schools, libraries, swimming baths and so on.

We had one of the wind up radio's from Wilko's it was ok for a few minutes but kept loosing charge, the one with the solar power is great - I keep ours in the window and never needs charging its great.

each region will have there own pandemic flu Plan, but here are some quotes from the Washington State Department of Health these are very similar to englands.

this is there flu plan : http://www.doh.wa.gov/panflu/plannin...ergprep.htm#ds

Disruption of Services
During a pandemic, services provided by medical facilities, banks, stores, restaurants, government agencies, transportation systems, and schools might be disrupted. Public gatherings such as concerts and worship services may be canceled.

People should prepare for a pandemic as they would for any other emergency, including maintaining supplies of food, water and other essential items. (See back cover for more information and a list of resources.)

Business and Government Preparedness
Businesses and government agencies must be prepared for large numbers of employees missing work for a variety of reasons. Illness, caring for family members or lack of transportation could keep people off the job.

Businesses should develop plans for operating during a pandemic. They should prioritize critical work functions and provide employees with the information and resources they need.

Public health, at the state and local levels, is working with businesses to encourage and assist with planning. The state Emergency Management Division and the Department of Health are working with other state agencies to ensure state government continues to provide essential services during a pandemic.

BREAKING NEWS

http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/qld-...0501-ap9p.html

AUSTRALIANS have been advised to stockpile food and water after the World Health Organisation raised its swine flu alert to phase five yesterday, indicating an imminent pandemic.

http://www.livenews.com.au/swine-flu...009/5/1/204745

A federal government pandemic plan suggests Australians should be stockpiling enough supplies to last two weeks, on the back of an increase in the swine flu alert level.
