i make nappy cakes and i contacted trading standards, for advice, as i dont want to make any mistakes from the begining.
They wil be visiting me in the next few weeks.
They have already mentioned that i cant unbox items-ie toys due to copyright issues, i cant leave them in the box as the cake will look unsightly.
What about the nappies that i unwrap from the packet so i can make the cake shape itself?
any advice will be greatfully recieved

Well thats great that they will come out and help you, but to be honest its all about common sense with trading standards. My main job is a customer service manager for a large retailer so Ive had to go on the legal courses to make sure we comply with them.
Its all about not misleading customers, so make them think something is something its not. So dont pass off something someone else made as your own, must be fit for purpose, not badly or wrongly describing goods and services, age restrictions etc.
Dont know what nappies you will use but so many people make and sell them there cant be an issue with opening the packet so long as you give the company credit for their product. Have you thought about using real nappies instead? They dont come wrapped in anything a lot of the time.
There are lots of toys you could add that dont come in a box so have a hunt around, most just have a tag on which is fine.
I think people really fear the trading standards, and yes they have powers, but most people dont do anything so bad to get in to trouble with them. The big one they stalk us for is selling age restricted items, but we know what not to sell to who so we are fine. I think at least once a day a customer not getting their own way tells me they are taking us to TS, I go and get the phone number for them now and say "let me know what they say wont you". :D
Good luck with your visit.

Trading Standards want to help you to get it right, they certainly won't go beserk when they first meet you as they just want to make sure you adhere to law. Find out what you have to do if you do take something out of its packaging - I'm sure as long as you can show exactly what the product is you will be OK.

TBH when I first started at the company customers scared the heck out of me when they threatened me and I just did what they wanted! Now I know different and more, I dont take kindly to threats :cheesy:
