I've just started my Folksy shop, but, already I am wondering if I might get more sales via my own website. I have no idea how to go about that but my main concern is costs. As the Folksy site doesn't cost me anything except a peppercorn fee when I list an item (though I've yet to sell anything) its costs next to nothing to set and use, but, of course people have to be able to find 'my' shop amongst all the others on there, whereas my own site I'd be able to set up as I like, and proactively advertise it and hopefully would get more visitors.
Its so confusing.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the pros and cons of both methods please?

I used to list everything of mine though ebay, and did fairly well. I took the plunge into my own website, and since doing so, i've taken more orders, at a higher price than i used to charge on ebay, and without ebay taking a % fee of my total.
Moving away from ebay (so far) has been the best move i've made. I can now proactively promote my website, and have it at a solid base. I'm currently working version 2 of my website, with a more integrated shopping cart.
However, i'm a techie by trade, and whilst i don't work as a web designer, i can quite easily play around with code to get my site doing what i need it to that i can do this for free (providing i have the time)
I'd suggest getting yourself a free bit of webspace, and some basic web design tools / templates and just have a play to see what you can achieve. (if you think you are able to, and have the time)
If you are thinking that there is no way you would be able to build your own site, there are some people on here who can probably advise you better that i can with different options. I'm not sure how much a web designer would charge for a store.
my web address is http://www.personalisedcarsigns.co.uk
Version 2 of my website is almsot there, you can check it out at http://www.personalisedcarsigns.co.uk/shop if you want to.

Thank you for replying. I am almost sure that my DH could sort out the techie stuff for me, so, thats not too much of an issue, and if he can't I do know my BIL CAN.
I shall keep looking into it for now, until I can make sense of it all.
Love the look of the new site btw.
