After months of trying I've finally manged to get access to my server. I've had a friend of DH's show me how to log on and he kindly downloaded Dreamweaver to our computer. So I need to make some changes to my front page, nothing technical just text to begin with as it's all very scarey for a novice. I've used Keyword Tool to see what people are searching on, of cources my main search term will be Jolly Phonics (http://www.educationtakeaway.com/shop/pc/viewCategories.asp?idCategory=54), I've changed title tags and descriptions, so what next? Keep it simple please.

make sure key words are in heading tags, get plenty of incoming links, and make sure the web page URL's make sense, so instead of
www.example.com/page1.html
it reads something like
www.example.com/contact_us.html
Make sure your content has been written well, takeing in to account that writing for the web is different to writing for print.
There is plenty more to go at, but that's a start.

Well timed questions for me! Just trying to get to grips with this myself.
Can I add a little query? When your entering the key words do you separate the phrases by commas or just put a long list of words? Spot a total novice :cheesy:

Thanks, I've managed to get key words in the heading tags. As for page URL's making sense I really wouldn't have a clue where to start.

Ann - have you had my freebie guide to SEO ? It goes through meta tags? If you're a member of my newsletter list you would have had it - if not send a blank email to socialmediauk@aweber.com and you'll get one automatically.
I'd recommend -
sorting out keywords
Ensuring all your on page seo is taken care of
Then moving on to off-page stuff like backlinks etc
Pete is right about your URLs - they aren't optimised and this is a ranking factor. This is something normally enables by a "contribution" can you ask your techies to make this happen for you?

I am the techie person!!! Long story but I'm not using the company that desinged the site. So everything that needs doing is up to me. I know nothing about SEO, URL's, Servers APS, PHP or anything else for that matter. What is a "Contribution"?

Hi Ann,
I have a non techie guide to SEO on my website here:
http://www.glassraven.com/web-design-resources.php
Your onpage content is a big part of your SEO - so making sure that you use your keywords in your content, writing it for the search engines aswell as ensuring its engaging for your users.
A 'contribution' is what addons are called in carts such as osCommerce that give you SEO friendly URLs.
URL is your page identifier - like the one I posted above for my website.
ASP and PHP are programming languages :)
