I just had a letter back from the Royal Mail saying that a claim I had submitted for a lost parcel to Ireland has been rejected as the cotton nappies that I sent are a prohibited item to be sent to Ireland - as per the rules for the Republic of Ireland - not a random Royal Mail rule. How ridiculous is that?! They do not accept either 'waterproof clothing, or manufactured cotton goods' and decided that it therefore falls under both of those categories. Bloody place. I will not be sending anything to Ireland in future then. Grrrr.

How strange, do they produce their own cotton then. Does that mean that no one in Ireland wears anything made of cotton. I've never heard of anything so ridiculous in my life.

Me neither. Hope the parcel wasn't too expensive.

Look at Item 9
there's an import duty on cotton goods, that would imply that it's not prohibited, royal mail might be confused. However I am not an expert on the matter.

Presumably it is OK to import cotton into Ireland, just not manufactured cotton goods.

Wouldn't it be against EU free circulation of goods?

I just found an Irish Parliamentary Debate that discusses the issue of the problem of cheap British cotton goods being imported into Ireland and causing all sorts of problems for the Irish producers. It goes on and on and on and I have no idea how old it is but it looks like they are leading to the conclusion that some sort of limits need to be set on how much can be imported and that companies that wish to import such goods into Ireland need to jump through hoops to ensure the quota is not exceeded. Clearly I have broken some rule or other, but I've never had problems with it before. I was already quite fed up with sending things to Dublin anyway as such a high proportion go missing, so this is just the final straw and I don't think I'll bother in future.

How bizzare! They paid out to me on some Tots Bots a wrap and nappy bag went AWOl about 3-5 years ago to Ireland. However I may just have described them as nappies.
What REALLY hacks me off about RM is you staple the FULL detail of the claim to the form and send it off then they write back with NO reference whatsoever (when you sent off 2 different ones) and say that you now need to send cost price info for the missing items, you write back and say it was stapled to the form and 6 weeks later they pay one out but not the other???!!!

Maybe that is my problem then, it was a product that has the word cotton in its name and it showed on the customers receipt with that word in so that must have been the giveaway for them.
I sent a few claims in at the same time and they wrote back last week saying that 'the claim' that I had submitted has been closed as they didn't get a response from the person that should have received the goods so they assume that they did receive it. I had to then ring RM to find out which particular claim they were referring to, then contacted the people that haven't responded only to find that RM have taken so long to contact them that they have moved house in that time so haven't received the blooming letter from RM. Grrrr. They make me mad!
