We're trying to cut back on everything (debts and bills mounting up!!!)and just wondered how much people spend on their weekly shop ? Ours could be anything between £100 and £130 which seems a lot seeing as there's only 4 of us (and DS doesn't each much anyway!!)

Mine used to be that a week and half the food got wasted.

I now fill the freezer up every month at iceland £40-50, do a big shop at asda every month £40-50 then its prob £10 a week for bread and fresh stuff.

So we prob spend £140 a month compared to that a week before. Theres still plenty of food in cupboards/fridge etc we just go for the asda smart price now just as good as the normal range or extra special range.

My best bargain and get most meals out of is when you buy 2 chickens for a £5 from Asda or Tesco, 1 Chicken I can get a roast, a casserole and tit bits for a very grateful pussy cat!

We spend about £100 a week on groceries cleaning stuff etc There are 4 of us but my dh works long hours so doesn't always eat with us so i have to do 2 teas each night. I think it's reasonable as we can afford it and there's always plenty of food in the house.

I feel a bit better reading this as I always though my £90 a week was a lot but as we eat well and a lot of fresh stuff AND there is 7 of us (4 adults too lol) that does'nt seem too bad, along side that I freezer shop too

I found that by buying better quality we spent as much but ate less - like sausages, cheap sausages the lads could eat loads of but if I buy premium they eat say 2 and they are better for them

At the moment as we are in dire straits, due to dp losing his job and not being paid since Sept we are trying avidly to stcik to £25-40 a week! Depends how much we have spare!

I eat lots of fresh fruit, veg and salad! I cannot stand processed foods (ie frozen type things), ready meals etc and try to cook everything from fresh!

We have a really good butcher at a Sunday and get loads of Meat for £50...usually this is 5lbs minced steak (£5), 16 pork chops (£10), Gorgeous steaks (about 5 large for £10), and then two joints for £10..(beef and pork), ham joints or gammon (£5)....and about 12 chicken breasts (£10).

We spend about £3 a week on fresh veg....three for £1 from a farmers stall!

£2 on a big bag of freshly dug potatoes!

Then from the supermarket it's pasta, passata, bread, salad, fruit, cheese, milk, juice, all household cleaners, washuing powder, nappies, bottle of wine...so on an average week when not skint we spend around £50-£80 depending on what we need and what 'extras' we throw in!

We haven't been to get the meat for a while though.....and i really miss it!

We eat quite alot of fish too! Salmon, Haddock, prawns, mussels, and when we can afford red mullet or snapper, tuna etc we but that aswell! (but not from a supermarket from a a fishmongers)

I tend to shop at Iceland for freezer stuff, although I do most of my shopping at Morrisons and get lots of BOGofs lol - I am paranoid about not having food in and we do have well stocked cupboards BUT now hubby is out of work it is making me more careful about what we buy .

I must admit though fresh veg and fruit does up the shopping bill ! I have been making lots of soup, the fave at the moment is butternut squash and I got coconut milk for that from Aldi as it was the price of any where else

About the same here {only three of us} and we buy meat seperately from the Butcher. Its more when we go to Asda but that is down to all the extras like clothes etc.:blusingan

Anything between £60 and £90. I have done it for less than £50 in the past with no 'treats'.

My main weekly shop is usually about £55 then extra milk/fruit/veg/bread through the week. I try to alternate the weeks I need washing powder and toilet paper as they are the most expensive single items.

I do a big shop once a fortnight, usually at Asda, occassionally Iceland, spend about £100 then just stock up at the local Budgens in the week. Now have a Costco card, so will be going there once a month to stock up!! Should save a bit then (hopefully!)

Don't bank on it Lisa, Costco is soooooooooooooo tempting lol !!

Seriously though do you find that when stuff like cereal and coffee and sauces need topiing up that is what makes it add up to so much

ahh, love the pussy cat pic,is it yours. I find lunch boxes expensive, kids are very competative in the food area and as for my other half he is a cookie monster with loads of choccy biscuits. I enjoy tuna pasta and pesto, nice and cheap but noone else in the family would touch it, they all to fussy. And also isn't the Best of Both bread getting expensive, wot a rip off, its taken 6 mnths to convert my son who has bowl probs and now thank goodness he is on wholemeal which is around 50p instead of 85p Best of both:cold1:

Our school provides free school dinners and a snack during the day of fruit or veg, but quite cheap doing lunchbox as its normally a sarnie, smart price yoghurt, home made bun they dont want anymore than that.

The asda smart price biscuits are great value as mine are all biscuit monsters. Iceland is great for kids puds, you can get 6 iceland cornetos for £1.00 you pay £1.00 for a walls corneto from shop.

We have a freezer shop called Herons and they are great you can get the Asda forzen mini cheescakes at 2 trays for £1.00 so ideal little treats and excellent for parties.

When me & dh first married we only had £100 a week wages between us for all food and bills, I use to write a menu for the week and take a calculator with me when doing the shopping. No nasty shocks at the till and you know if you have got a bit left over for a treat.

Does everyone pay cash for there grocceries or put it on the plastic. I pay cash, otherwise its too tempting to put extra in the trolley if paying on credit card.

Iceland also do some good deals on ice-creams, & I very NEVER give mine money 2 buy an ice-cream now, unless we're on holiday, cos they R sooo expensive

Same here, always buy ice-cream and lollies from Iceland, mine only get them when we are on holiday.

I think they do a great range of frozen veg as well.

We get around £30 week from Iceland, and top up with bread etc when needed. I love salad but am the only one who eats it out of me and OH. Any tips on how to keep lettuce longer?

little tip for lettuce, dont cut with a normal knife, it lasts longer if u use a plastic knife or fingers, strange but true, lol

and lettuce keeps longer if its out of the plastic wrapper/bag !

I love salad and love the watercress leaves they are yummy - does any one know where they do smaller bags of them though as the big bags are too big for me
