View Full Version : Public liability insurance - coffee mornings
putting this here cos im guessing you wahm'ers know about this...
im confused!! (doesn't take me much lol)
I have arranged to hold a weekly coffee morning at the school during term time. I need PLI but i don't know what catagory i fall in...initially the coffee morning is a non profitable event...but this could be subject to change, if we did charge, it wouldn't be more than 50p per person.
we are hoping to hold events there too occassionally, like bring and buy, learn something shrugshoulders111, bingo!! who knows,. depends what people want.
I am applying for a grant but need to show a quote for PLI
anyway. ive been looking online for a quote and i can't see any catagory that this would fall into?? any help greatly appreciated.
thanks

If you are doing it to raise money for the school, couldn't they add you to their insurance? That's what we do when we are fundraising for Edward's Trust, we can't afford our own PLI so they cover us on theirs.

If the 50 p is only going to cover the cost of the coffee you coud still be not-for-profit. What is the aim of the coffee morning, what organisation is behind it - e.g. is it for school parents through the PTA or....
its not raising money for anyone really, its a community thing. there is a pot of money from CVS which is available to our area for things for the community. so far the neighbourhood commitee have had benches, notice boards, neighbourhood watch signs, community picnic, and the money runs out soon. So we have come up with the coffee morning idea, just to bring people together and have a natter and so on, open to all, old, young, with kids, no kids..everyone!.
the grant will only pay for coffee, room hire. PLI etc for one year, so if we were to charge in the future it would only to cover these costs. well, depending how much PLI is lol.
the school have approved it and are very supportive, we had our first coffee morning last week and as the people from the CVS were there, we used thier PLI.

Hi,
I don't know if this helps but I got some quotes online and they were really expensive the nost reasonable quote was the national traders association who cover insurance for folks who run small stalls - about £100 per annum for two people. Its worth making sure you have this aspect covered as you just never know!

I'm sure that if you did it as a PTA type thing you should be insured via theirs, or surely if the school are being so supportive they will have you there under their insurance. I would check it out with the headteacher and see what can be organised.
