DD (just turned two) came home froma day at my parnets on Friday with bites on her back, shoulders, neck and hair line!
Dp noticed as he put her in the bath (i was at work) and the poor little one was crying and itching!
We discussed that i had to tell my mother that she needed to check her cat! Now i don't have a great relationship with my parnets at all but dd is thier life!
So last night when she called to ask if dd could stay this Friday and Saturday i asked her to check the cat for fleas because of Friday!
She was really defensive and said that our cats and dogs live outside so are wild and anyway fleas canot stand the heat or the smell of smoke so she knows her cat hasn't got them! (i asked her two months ago aswell, but she replied that he was being wormed so would check him after that!) It appears she never did..even though she says she did! She's had a new extension built and has no soft furnuishings in there and that's where they were all day! But as they have yet no floor covering they have cardboard laid down, until it's tiled.
He's a huge Ginger Tom with masses of Fur and it's long! I noticed he is always scratting and twitching and have suggested to both parents they take him to the vets incase he has a skin irritation or someting..but they never got the hint.
She said it upset her to think thought they had fleas..and that they are biting dd if they had but she was more set on telling me how houseproud she is! I explained ours have drops every 3 months and we have used a spray in our house that kills any lava etc when we moved in! And i am prone to bites,,she's had none since at ours etc..but it's just not anything you cna say with out it causing offence is it?

I would have done the same, after all u dont want 2 subject ur dd 2 being bitten each time she goes round there, & also there's the chance of her bringing them home 2 ur house 2
Not 2 worry, I think I'm about 2 have a similar conversation with my bil about his oh's dog that they brought round with them last night. the poor little thing ws scratching away 1/2 the night, & her tummy looked really sore.
Dh has said that if we find ANY fleas in the house, he's gonna bill bil's oh 4 the house 2 be fumigated!!http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b117/kathyhinsh/Smilies/angrysoapbox.gif
Fleas love the heat and will live on any animal whether that animal be an indoor or out door kind.
There is a good product on the market called front line, once every 3 months should sort her problem.
Poor cat must be miserable if he has fleas.
If you take your daughter back again, take a bottle of frontline with you.
Really can’t understand why someone would get defensive just by asking them to check their animals for fleas, surely if you have animal’s part and parcel of that is sometime or another they will bring unwanted visitors into the home.
(Just like having kids really. just discovered that DD has got nits):hissyfit:

Cheers Ladies just saw my dad in Tesco's on his way to work and he never said anything so i gather that she hasn't mentioned it too him!
Our animals are treated with Frontline regular which is why i know they don't have them!
I tried to make out i wasn't blaming her directly but could of been somewhere she had visited with dd, but they had been at home all day!
Hopefully she will actually do something this time, else dd will NOT be going to stay!
I just think if it were me, i would have my animals checked regular anyway! ....people....

One of mine came home from Grandma's with bites on them once and as she lives up the road and round the corner, next time we saw her a few days later, I showed them to her all worriedly and said, 'look at these, what do you think they are, hope she's not going down with anything, she's scratching them alot so they must ge itchy' It was her who told me that they must be bites and after explaining that I'd just had my dog done a couple of weeks ago at the vets so I wonder where she could have got them from she said that maybe she'd got them at her house. It was much easier than telling her that she'd got them there and causing any umbridge and she dealt with the fleas without any hard feelings luckily.

That's rubbish. Next time you visit your parents I'd check the cat myself very discreetly.

I know it's Rubbish//but after several hints i've dropped about him scratching and twitching...in all honesty i have been bitten there myself before, but ddin;t think anythign of it until a few hours later at home ...i just had to tell her! I didn't say oh i think your cat has fleas or anythign just asked if she would do me a favour and check her cat as dd had quite a few bites that were obviously new that day!

Well I'm not sure why she's offended by that then Shiraz, you handled it as best you could. If the cat has fleas they must have bites themselves so if there is a flea problem they have to already know. I'm not sure why she won't admit it.
I do remember coming home from my parents once with flea bites and my Mum complained that she had flea bites too, the only thing was......... they didn't have any pets but we had a cat :blusingan I must have taken a flea there with me :(

I had the same problem when madam was younger - my mum has a dog and my sister has a cat so when I told them I'd found bites on madam they both pointed the finger at the others pet. TBH I just told them that if one had them then the other probably did as well so to just treat them both.

My grandma's dog has had fleas several times, but luckily she's not offended when I (extremely prone to bites) shoved her tiny red bites (scratched to blod by the hour) and told her I thought Anton (the dog) had brought home some guests.
I hope your parents gets it sorted yesterday!

She's phoned this morning to ask if i know if the vets can give them jabs for fleas.
Siad herself and my sis checked the cat last night but couldn;t see any! However his fur is sooo long and tough that it's blumming hard. My sis even admitted her boyf has been bitten and so has she!
I've offered them the STAYKILL sparay we bought when we first moved in here and they are going to use it! They shall ring the vet and see what they advise be it drpos, injection etc etc, and get him sorted as she knows he DOES HAVE THEM! Bloody cheek!
So dd is off to stay next week sometime.
I feel so much better now.....

The vets can give flea jabs although the cats dont like it and they are nicer ways. I think its a Frontline tablet that I get for mine but will check.

Aww I'm glad they took your advice Shiraz:) My grandparents were looking after my Uncle's cat whilst they were on holiday and when Zack was asleep I saw a flea on his blanket! I told my nan and she immediately sorted the cat out and washed her settee covers etc. My nan is houseproud aswell, I'm not sure why your mum was so offended. Anyways, at least its being sorted now :) xxx
