I've been roped in to sit on the Formal committee for my uni class and we're trying to tackle fundraising atm to try to reduce costs for the formal tickets (please remember we're students, most of us are mature so we're trying to keep costs down!) - so does anyone have any idea/tips/suggestions to help us along? Any ideas would be gratefully received.

At church we do a bucket game and a heads and tails game. Any time we have loads of people in one place, be it the harvest supper, the autumn fair, quiz night that sort of thing we take £1 off everyone and they are given a raffle ticket and when all have paid who want to play the crowd either stand up with their hands on their heads for heads or sit on their hands for tails or if they're all standing just keep their hands down. The caller flips a coin and if it's heads everyone sitting down is out and it goes on and on until only one person is left and they win half the money taken. Its one of our biggest money raisers and can be done anytime theres a crowd. The ticket is purely so you don't get people joining in who havn't paid, they have to produce their ticket to get the money, you don't have to use tickets if you don't wan't to.

The bucket works in much the same way but is good for when everyone is moving around a lot like at a fair and the £1 goes into the bucket and the each person puts their name down next to a number and a number is drawn from the hat, again raffle tickets and whoever is on that number gets half the money in the bucket. Sounds confusing but very easy.

HAve you got a local business or several who would consider donating in exchange for publicity?

what about local press? They love to help with things like this - run a story or something..

Raffle?

What about talking to local businesses.. Make a picture of something (a teddy bear or something with either a nurses outfit on or something) and ask them to place them in their shops/shop window.. Then you charge £1 or £2 and get local people to go around and count how many they can find? Its a bit of a faff to organise, but it works really well as it pulls lots of different people into the shops too so everyone's a winner.. Then you find the winner and you give them a set amount as a prize and you get to keep the rest for your event?

What about a fundraising gig? Comedy nights? open mic nights? all done through uni, these always used to raise shed loads of cash when I was at uni.. You charge per ticket, you charge per act! IT works brilliantly and the student union bar makes money too, and if you are really persuasive then they might donate x amount of the profits too
