Have any of you tried to get insurance quotes on line when you run a business from home?
Last year I just got my insurance through a broker, they were called Fairfield but now Swinton Colonade. I was insured through them but as soon as the original company found out that I ran the site from home they suspended my policy. Swinton Colonade found me another company.
This year I need to renew the building/contents to cover the fact that the business is run from here. The original company seemed to have a problem with the fact that our home address is on the website.
Can I get quotes like this online (using confused.com, etc) or will I have to ring round since it is more specific?
:thank_you:

I am insured with More Than for home insurance and the policy actually specifies benefits for people working from home, so I'm assuming they are OK with businesses working from home that haven't specifically informed them of this. I took out my policy online and it didn't ask about it.

I tokk out my last insurance through the federation of small businesses when I joined them a few weeks bakc as they offered me a discount, plus it was the cheapest quote I could get.
I have never had much luck with online quotes to be honest in the past!

My home insurance is due for renewal. I have found a quote that asked about home-working (i.e. is it clerical only, customers visiting etc.) so that is fine. Of course it does not actually offer the business insurance (e.g. product liabuilty, public liability etc) but at least by me saying I have a clerical run business in the home it will not invalidate the home insurance.
I am hoping that soon insurance companies will realise how many home businesses there are and start offering a complete package!! Even Direct Line are being choosey which trades they accept.

I am waiting for Manor to call me back with a quote. I'll try More Thans website now.
More Than's website is down, I'll have to do some housework while I wait for the call. :ac39::cheesy:

I don't know this for sure but I would imagine that working-from-home is viewed as something different from running-a-business-from-home.
My advice would be to make sure they know what your circumstances are or the policy might not be valid if they find out later. I had to jump through alot of hoops to find a policy that would cover a 2nd property, it amazed me how many insurance companies were just not interested.

I have liabilities and contents insurance via manor and liverpool victioria for buildings. They cover businesses at home but not the liabilities so i couldn't do the whole lot with them.

I'm with Simply Business (I think they have a .co.uk website) I have the small business insurance which covers stock, public liability etc and a few days at fairs etc.
Might be worth having a look at their website!

I've just gone through Confused.com to find the cheapest quotes and will ring those tomorrow to see what they can come up with. There was an option to add that you work from home but it only mentions clerical work.
I tried Googling 'work from home insurance' but you need to either ring the companies and it is too late or online retailer/mail order isn't listed as a catergory.

Updating this with what I have found incase in helps someone else.
CoverDirect/Fortis, Post Office and AIG all came tops on Confused.com for home insurance but when I called them and explained that I ran the business from home I was told they wouldn't insure me at all. When I did the quotes through Confused it allowed me to state that i worked from home but only doing clerical work, there wasn't any other options.
Insure.co.uk gave a very good home insurance quote but it wouldn't cover my stock at all. They were happy with the fact that the business operates from home.
More Than could do home/building insurance and that would cover stock upto £7000. They wouldn't give me business insurance as the business didn't fit their criteria despite the fact they advertise work from home policies. They put me onto One Business Solutions who could do the additional insurance I need for the business, I won't go into the details of the quote but it was just £130. :happy72:
I've got it down from £550 with Manor to £300 using two companies. :happy72:

I'd recommend using Confused.com if it is for your house insurance too, it gave me a good starting point to make phone calls.
