obscure

Hi all,
Not been on forums in ages again - just don't seem to have the time at the moment, we're having a big blitz at redecorating the house aswell as working on several biggy development projects!
Did anyone else get a spam email that looked like it had come from mumszone this afternoon?
It didnt mention mumszone anywhere in the email but the from address was forums@ mumszone .co.uk and it came to my registered forum address.
Hope you guys are all doing ok and that business is going well - hopefully will get some breathing space soon to come back and catch up with you all :D

No it's not a spam email - it's a newsletter advertiser we have done as a one off!

I thought it was spam too, I came on to ask. It is weird that I never get newsletters but got that.

:hysterica That's typical! At least it proves emails are getting through to you.

Mmm, I didn't get one. Do I need to sign up for something?

No sometimes it takes a while for them to get through as we have so many subscribers

I class that as spam, sorry! How do I opt out of getting them?

I haven't had one yet

As I said, it was a one off.
If you dont want to receive newsletters or content from Mumszone then you can change it in your USERCP - select not to receive email from admin by taking the tick out of the box.

I don't mind getting emails about what is happening with Mumszone, I just mind getting adverts

I can't guarantee that at some point in the future I won't do the same again (we have to pay our rather large webhosting bill and software licence fees somehow), although at present I'm not planning to, so if you would prefer not to receive you are probably better to remove receiving admin emails.

Will do, if it had an opt out thing it would look less like spam IMO.

All Mumszone newsletters normally do have opt out. As I said, this was the first time we have sent an email of this nature.

It's ok, I am not on your case about it, sorry if it seems like that. I am just saying that I would have looked twice at it if it had an opt out, as it was it looked just like spam to me.

In hindsight I should have put a post about it before I sent to give people the option to opt out and not receive it should they not wish to - if I should do anything similar in the future I will give notice first. Generally it's not something I normally do but we are faced with a huge webhosting bill at the moment as we need to upgrade to a higher spec server.

:happy72:I've pm'ed you
I got it too and just assumed it was spam so deleted it. Toni, you don't usually send out adverts like that without some intro from you.
I thought it was spam too because I haven't had a Mumszone newsletter for a long time.

No as I say, the first time and at the moment intended as a one off. I will be doing a newsletter shortly, a new template is being made at the moment as we have now changed our site colours.

I've not had mine yet, but just read your post in the main forum.
I have to be honest, Toni, what exactly is it?
When I started reading it I thought it was an advert for the wahm section, but then it became something different.
Do any of your members have just under £7000 plus VAT to invest in a franchise of an indeterminate source?
I know I don't :cheesy:

Adverts pay for the site. Personally I think it's worth it (mine just went unopened to delete)

:iagree: Toni has to raise a lot of money to pay for here and if a single email helps her to do it then its fine by me. If you don't want the email then delete it. Unfortunately, she can't please everyone when it comes to fundraising but she can't be expected to turn down revenue in case its viewed as spam.

I got it too, was a bit confused by it to be honest as it didn't look like the normal newsletter.I alays delete anything that looks like like spam anyway so it didn't really bother me.I just seen they were after money and hit delete.

I agree with Colette, it pays for the site, bring it on. If you don't want to read it delete it, theres a litle button to press at the top of you computer and you just click on it, easy.
It really isn't a problem is it. World hunger is a problem, the Gulf war is a problem, one little email isn't.

Like I say, should I do it again, which I'm not planning to at the moment, I will put some indication at the top to say its come via Mumszone. I didn't really want to put it in our normal template as I thought that would look odd but I will think of something else. I ended up rushing to get it out in the end yesterday at a busy time which is never good!

I don't really have a problem with it as I know this is free and the costs of running must be covered some way. I think I would get annoyed if it was every day, but no problem with ad hoc or monthly emails like it.

It didn't bother me but if the odd email like this makes lots of people unsubscribe then it isn't going to help the site. Businesses aren't going to want to pay to advertise in a newsletter with few subscribers or if they don't get hits from it as it has automatically been sent to the spam folder.

Ditto. No harm done, no paper wasted, no real effort to just hit delete if you're not interested.
Toni - just an idea but perhaps a small message from you at the beginning to explain it's a sponsored ad to help support Mumszone, or something like that...

Like I said earlier though, people have the option to opt out. On every newsletter I send, apart from the one yesterday, it gives that option, and, if I should send any similar in the future then I will make sure it has the opt out on that as well. As far as I am concerned my main concern at the moment is making sure we can pay webhosting bills and overrides a couple of people deciding to unsubscribe.
As for it going in to spam, again, that's quite hard to change and depends on spam filters and that would be something everyone that sends newsletter has an issue with.

I think it is an acceptable and realistic part of being a member of a free site like this.
You could have an opt in/out like,
do you want to receive newsletters and mailings from mumszone?
do you want to receive mailings from carefully selected third parties?
so people can get your newsletter and you can feel free to work up the advertising side.
Mine didn't get spam filtered but I deleted it thinking it was someone pretending to be from here. I get a lot of these sorts of WAHM company ads, just thought it was another one that had got through.

Yes that's a good idea, the problem is I'm not sure how I can set up just to opt out for third parties only with the software I use and to be honest I don't really want to have to use other software as then it would cost. Definitely worth looking into though.

Agh sorry Toni I didn't mean to spark off some debate lol!
Glad it was a legit one - I was worried that someone had somehow got hold of your database (would have been a bit of a fluke for a spam email to know the email addy I have registered here and to pretend to have come from you as I only use the addy I have on here on 2 websites!).
Personally had it had a short intro at the top (you know the sort - advert for subscribers of mumszone or similar) then I'd probably have deleted it and not thought anything more of it, but as it had nothing, nor did it have opt out or any of the standard email newsletter things on it I got a bit worried!
Glad it was legit anyway :)
It only took a split second to get junk mailed (actually hope I dont know have all MZ newsletters junked? will have to check that!) so nothing to worry me really lol! A drop in the ocean as far as spam is concerned!
