That was one example I had in mind actually. The meaning is slightly different depending on the spelling eg kane, Cane, Cain.
I like a girls name but the meanings are linked to death/bitterness.

i have to agree with missymum22 on this one, if i found a name i liked then discovered the meaning of it wasnt nice i think it would put me off a little. suppose it depends on how much you like the original name and if you had any second choice names which the meanings were more pleasing.

I think you should just love a name - it doesn't matter what it means.
Is it Lily - I love that name =D
Where are you looking for names? Is there a website??

No, not Lily. I've been Googling names weeks.

as long as you like the name, i think thats all the matters. mine has rubbish meanings. but my dad liked it n that was that. all the names that i look at for any babies that i may have of my own one day are failry random, but the meaning doesnt bother me.
go with what you like and what suits your little one when it gets here.

We had a name for Nathan, and it was a choice between Nathan and this other one. My brother told me what it meant, and whilst I didn't want that one because it didn't suit him anyway, it kind of put me off aswell itms

My kids names mean:
ds2 guardian of prosperity
ds1 supplanter
dd concecrated to God
My name means life and my husbands name means small (My MIL obviously did not check the meaning 1st)
I know its greedy but I almost had a fourth child and the meaning of the fourth babies name would have been:
like an angel for a girl
and
God is my strength for a boy
Unfortunately, I now can't have any more due to health problems, well technically I can but its not advisable.

I just chose names I liked with mine
have since found out that cam's is to do with a crooked nose but I knew it was Scottish. He has Scottish ancestors on his dads side
I chose madam's becuase it was from a book/film I like - the charcter is the concubine of Paulk Atredeides but it is also CHANA: Hebrew name meaning "gracious, merciful." CHANAH: Variant of Hebrew Chana, meaning "gracious, merciful." CHANI: Pet form of Hebrew Chana,
mine is Origin:It is of English origin. Short form of Alexandra (Greek) "man's defender" via Alessandra (Italian).

my dd name.. Rachel means Ewe!!! never knew that!
my ds name.. Mark means from the God Mars... aww thats nice
dont think it would bother me if I chose a name and it had a bad meaning.. but saying that I wouldnt call a boy Damien!
Heather = flowering plant
Lloyd = Gray
My son's name is Kameron, which means crooked nose. I don't care though and his nose is beautiful!
I guess it depends on the meaning. If I found out a name meant something really horrible, then yes I might reconsider.

meanings don't bother me, but Dh always looks them up.
Abigail means Father in rejoicing
William means Will, desire + helmet, protection
Amber means, well Amber, as in the stone
so nothing fancy but nothing too horrid either
It's taken so long to get Abigail on to the short, short, short list (still don't have a yes or No from DH) I don't think it would really matter what it meant.

The meaning would not put me off at all. I don't even know what Elliott means, I just loved the name.
I do think it is quite a responsibility naming a child, since they do have to live with that name forever. But, I think if the name is chosen with thought and love and then given with love then who cares what it means!

I think if I liked a name, and then I found out it meant the devil is inside him or something like that, I would have to reconsider because I would always think to myself about it. But if the name meant funny looking person, oh well, because that will have no effect on how i actually feel about my child or the name. So I guess it depends on if it would haunt me forever when with my child, but if not, then there is no reason to change it. A name is what you call someone, an term of endearment you gave to them, so if the meaning does not change that endearment to you, then who cares!
My favorite girls name, I completely made up. I have always liked names with Ys in the middle of them, and that start with K for girls. Like Kylie and Kaylee...but these days I find those names so common, that I wanted something a little more unique yet still beautiful and sounding like a name. i dont like names like Suri, apple, or denim, just seem to be what celebrities use to set their children apart...unnecesary, but i like names that sound good and if they mean something nice, then even better! i dont want to give my name away, but i will say it literally means (via latin and english roots that i put together) a nucleus that rests.....and id say thats a pretty neat name for a babe....in my humble opinion ;)
so i guess im saying if you love the name, and the meaning doesnt change how you feel about it.....USE IT!!!!

I think I'm a little supersticious if a name has a meaning of death!
I feel a little like that over names.
My Mums name was Irene and that means Peace. She died very young and I just associated Peace with RIP from an early age and I guess that despite being rational about most things I still link peace and death.

as you obviously have doubts i think the answer should be no...........
I did a mean thing last week without thinking..........I had religious callers at my door (didn't really know which, all I knew was they were discussing religion and I was only half listening) I have nothing against religion and hope I do not offend anyone in this post.
Anyway, they were doing their talk, I was very politedly trying to tell them that a) I wasn't interested and that b) I had to be somewhere (People always call when you are on your way out), and trying desperately to get a coat on 2 year old who had been a mischevious little madam all day and was driving me nuts by running off. One of the gentlemen asked me her name, I replied "It's Lucy" they said "That's a nice name, she certainly keeps you going" without thinking, and with her being a madam all day, I replied, jokingly as I often joke about this: "Yeah, picked the right name alright, it's short for Lucifer!"
Que two very unimpressed religious men!! They made a sharp retreat!
I felt awful, but it did make me laugh....
Didn't give too much thought to the meaning. (dd's name means sheep and her middle name, Rhiannon, means Goddess - sheep goddess!). We were much more concerned about making sure her initials didn't spell something stupid, and avoiding saddling her with something embarrassing.
Not sure how I'd feel about something really morbid or nasty though, but I guess different cultures have different attitudes. In China apparently it's really disrespectful to give your child the same name as a family member, whereas here it's quite a compliment.
Go on chell, what's the name? I'm intrigued.
