What are your views on the best carrier for back carries.

I'm wondering if wraps would be more comfy than MT's?

also I've never tried a wrap so what is a one for heavier babies? dd is about 10kgs now.

Thanks

i found a MT easier with my son, have carried him in one from 18mth to now and he just turned 3.i couldnt keep him still long enough for a wrap.i find both comfy.i think if you are really good with wraps then they are fine but i never mastered back carries.
wraps for bigger babies toddlers etc are best being woven ones rather than stretchy.
MTs are definitly easy to put on and the one ive got is comfy to wear.my daughter still goes in a front carry and she is 21mth.

I use an Ergo most often, because it's pretty foolproof and I can be putting J on my back while chasing A out the door for preschool and trying not to forget everything I need to take. I also use MTs and wraps, but am a bit out of practice so the times I decide I neeeed to wear something beautiful I have to spend a while working out how to do it!

Yep we use our ergo the most, still feels very comfy with a 12kg toddler and easy to put on :happy72:

sorry to hijack but I'm really glad to hear the ergo works so well as we've just started using one with our LO :happy72:

Does MT mean Mei Taii?! I'm new to all this abbreviated talk but am very interested in this discussion. I use a stretchy wrap at the mo which is very easy for front carry but I am wondering how on earth I will master the back carry with it!

Yes, MT is Mei Tai. You CAN back carry with a stretchy wrap, but it wouldn't be my recommendation. If you have a look at my site there's a guide to choosing a carrier, and thebabywearer.com has tons (sometimes too much LOL) of info.

Thanks eveyone .. I'm actually getting used to using my MTs on my back now ... It takes a bit of practice doesn't it, but now I feel confident enough to go up town with dd on my back :D

It does take practice, but once you get it sussed it's easy-peasy!

I use a GypsyMama gauze wrap with my 19 month old daughter. Very light and supportive.

Mei Tai, def. A stretchy wrap is only OK for back carries with assistance as you need to tie the wrap on first. A woven wrap is OK, but much harder to do. I also never felt 100% secure with her on my back in a woven wrap, but that's prob just me.

I have to say, we have a Patapum, Kari-me and a Connecta. DD has only just turned 4 months old, so have only just started to think about back carries.

Out of the three, I have to say, I think that the Connecta seems to be the easiest to master.

Kari-me isn't very good to do back carries one player and neither is the Patapum (so far that is). I'm looking at getting a woven wrap to do back carries.

im getting a ring sling. hopefully good for back and side carries, and easy to put child in/out as she wants up and down every 5 mins

oh yes! I put DS in our ring sling the other day and even with the huge bump it was comfy and he was happy. (kept saying I'm not a baby, then snuggled up:cheesy:)

are all of these things you are talking about types of 'sling'?? TELL ME MORE .... we tried a sling type carry and 3 carriers like tomy freestyle that people lent us and gave up in the end, either we didn't or Ruby screamed ... she's a year now, it would be nice not to always need the pushchair - eg when camping!

yes, slings. i will NEVER buy a 'factory' made sling again. I LOVED my mei tai's when Amy was little but now shes so active i cba with the tying, but need something small to fit in my bag and easy for on/off..in/out iykwim :cheesy:

so where do I get one from? Is it too late to start now she's a year do you think or can I still give it a go? We've been given one of those big rucksack type things for serious walking but it's quite heavy in itself and i don't find it comfortable. Bit concerned about spending too much if we're not going to get on with it, but would like to give it a go ...

Slings can be used until they're 4 years old if you wish.
I love my connecta and it's so simple to get him on my back with it.

Best place to try/see a variety of slings is at your local slingmeet (just do a web search for slingmeet)
There are so many available, everyone's different as to what works best for them, and this can change depending on what you're doing, age/development of your bub and your mood/what your're wearing :D

My favourite slings are woven wraps-versatility, snuggle factor, supportiveness, colours, texture. I can get DD on my back in a woven wrap (or Podaegi) faster than in an MT or SSC (soft-structured carrier). For hip carries I prefer a ring sling or rebozo/short wrap.

I wouldn't want to do a back carry in a stretchy wrap like a moby, they're just too stretchy/not supportive enough, a hybrid stretchy like GMBBS though works. For SSC's I never got on with Ergo's, but I found Connecta's really comfy.
