View Full Version : Website faults

What do you think about being told that there is a fault or something doesn't look quite right with your website?
I often see sites that don't look right in Opera (I use that as my default browser these days) but I am very wary of telling the owner in case they think I'm being too picky because I haven't designed it, or because I hate them (oh, that's happened!) or I'm after a job redoing it.
So, my question is, would you want to know if something is amiss, no matter how small or should I keep my nose out?
I am always grateful for feedback myself as I like to get it right and I don't always. I like to be told about it though and I consider input helpful.
What do you think?

If it was someone I knew I'd like to be told - I think if it was a random stranger emailing me I might feel a bit miffed

Yes I would much rather know.

I would rather know although I've still not had the fault fixed that you spotted.

I appreciate being told although I don't always act on it!

Overall I think help or advice is generally appreciated but it can sometimes be frustrating when you can't fix it and god knows we've all got enough headaches so yes most of the time and no some of the time ;)
Depends how I was told, how useful the information is and why I was told.

I would like to know.
In fact when I had my logo and header changed recently, I asked the designer to make the logo darker as it looked too light.
On my PC it now looks perfect (to my specifications) but having viewed it on 2 other PCs it looks quite dark.
Not sure how that could be corrected as it is dependent on people's personal settings but I wish I had known and I wouldn't have told him to keep making it darker!!

It would depend on who was telling. If it was somebody that I knew (or sort of knew) then that would be fine as I would know that they were being helpful but if it was just some random person I would just ignore it as I would think they were being unkind.

I'd like to know myself.
But I have stopped trying to help people I don't know, emails or contacting them saying:-
"your site is great but it doesn't work properly in opera or firefox"
tend to be ignored or met with:-
"Well it looks OK in IE"
which is stupid, OK IE is the most used browser but I think currently it stands at 85% of people use IE and 15% don't.
That's potentially 1 in 8 customers you your site might not work for, or it might look wrong for.
Can any business really risk rejecting 1 in 8 potential customers?
Lots of people just don't realise their website might not work for some people if it looks OK to them. They won't have even heard of Firefox, Mozilla or even Opera.
I used to use Opera when I was employed, my IT friends used it and it was the only browser with tabs at the time. Haven't used it for ages, but I do know lots of websites viewed differently using it.

I agree with what Tash said and also what Dino said.
Sometimes it can be a headache trying to get sites to look right in all browsers but a lot of people don't know about other browsers besides IE.

This is true, unfortunate but true. Such a shame that people think IE is all there is, I think 1 in 8 is a lot of custom they could be losing.
People do like to make their own websites though, because they think it's easy, and with no knowledge of proper design, no awareness of other browsers and no knowledge of disability rights requirments they often land themselves with some horrible websites.
It's not as easy as frontpage makes it look

I'd want to know. We have Macs so struggle to test my site in IE but usually know what it looks like in Safari, Opera and Firefox. Occasionally I still get people looking at my site using Netscape Navigator, which I thought had died out years ago.

I know this has been posted before, but it's invaluable for someone who doesn't want to have umpteen different browsers
http://browsershots.org/
And it's very useful for checking multiple version of IE as sometimes they can render a site very differently as well, and it's not possible to run multiple IE versions on windows. (well not easy anyway)

Tell me all..... I would much rather be told if there is a problem. I don't think that anyone would think that you are after a job.

I still use Netscape Navigator myself sometimes (just like it), I find it is more picky than IE, so do check websites with it.

I would rather know as long as the person telling me worded it right. I think if you have spent ages on a site and someone be it u know them or not and says oh btw that doesnt work in blah blah blah u need to do this this and this, i might be a bit miffed, BUT if they came along and said wow look what u have done its great but i use whatever and this bit here didnt quite work....
I think its definatly dependant on the wording iykwim?
