should my 2yr old watch dora the explorer, she is right in the middle of counting and identifying colours and objects and she loves watching dora and diego. would it not be confusing to her if they are constantly refering to colours, numbers and objects in both english and spanish?. she should be concentrating on english only at her age. i am sure the show is good for older children looking to learn spanish but not for younger children who are just learning english. to me this is a no brainer NO DORA OR DIEGO. does anyone have any ideals as to which educational shows she could be watching?

My DS (just turned 2) loves dora and is quite happily picking up a bit of spanish along the way. The younger the easier it is for them to learn, and it hasn't affected his english at all, every so often he will refer to some thing, mostly the colour blue in both languages.

Both of mine have watched Dora. I think it is good for them to learn some Spanish along the way as they are so receptive to learning at this age. My DS1 is alway asking how to say a word in Spanish or French. Most of the time I can't help him unfortunately. Maybe if they had something like Dora around when I was little I would be better able to help him.
I think it is your own personal choice if you would rather your dd didn't learn anything other than English. If you feel it would be better then don't let her watch it. Its probably more confusing to us than them.

Research has shown that bilingual children are actually likely to be more advanced than children who learn just one language.
My dd as watched dora from an early age & loves it, I can honestly say it as not confused her she loves saying the words she knows in spanish, But do what you feel is right for your dd....:kisshands:

I don't think it would confuse her, it is done in a very clever way that children understand easily.

My son watched Dora (I never minded it) and now he is learning Spanish at school and I think it helped with his confidence. At least they learn and laugh with that one not like some of the new shows, which are mind numbing!

Don't think there was anything like that when Rach (now 17) was little. But we did watch Sesame Street, and she understood that sometimes they used different words for things. Sidewalk for pavement and so on. Kids love playing with language.

i think there is some research although don't have the details that say the earlier the child learns a second language the easier it is. something to do with the neurones in the brain not being fully formed so if they learn a second or even third language it kind of gets hard wired into the brain. I think it was something I read on how much easier children under 5 find to learn Mandarin Chinese. Many adults try and learn it for business but there was something saying it will be the business language of the future and all little kids should be learning it -i may be wrong - it was about 2-3 years ago!!!

children learn faster in the first 5 years than in any other time of their lives. My kids all watch Dora and all speak some words of Spanish. My son is really interested in languages so we learn together or i just tell him things that i have learnt.
He loved it when i told him "non sum pices" ( i am not a fish in Latin) and will often suddenly come out with it (nearly 7) and we will say hello or thank you in different languages to each other... I think its fab. I only started languages when i went to secondary school and really struggled with them so if i can do anything to help his confidence now ready for then then i will!
We will also look on the net or phone someone we know who speaks various languages if we dont know a word that we wanted to use.
Bens godfather speaks Japanese so he taught ben some of that!
