Not sure if any of you have read these books but here are a few on my shelf, that I would like to read in the near future. (just suggestions!)
The House at Riverton (http://www.amazon.co.uk/House-at-Riverton-Kate-Morton/dp/0330448447/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1199437661&sr=8-1)

Half of a Yellow Sun (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Half-Yellow-Chimamanda-Ngozi-Adichie/dp/0007200285/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1199437823&sr=1-1)
umm, just me being eager :) to start book club- when shall we begin? and shall we all just choose one book and go in alphabetical order according to mz name? or vote for a book each month?

Ah The House at Riverton, I nearly bought that for my christmas as I liked the sound of it, opted for The Island instead.
I have one request, I cannot read any books about abuse/neglect (bookshop shelves seem to be full of them these days, however if that is the choice I would opt out for that one and resume after.
pix4bu
04-01-2008, 11:18 AM
I have The Island to read as well ( a book I started but ended up putting back on my shelf!) so don't mind picking it up again.
I agree, I can't handle abusive books nowadays. Am also, afraid, not big on chic lit, but will read it so long as it's not assigned every month.

Did you have any thoughts/plans in place Vicky? ""cutey""b It's a fab idea to get it started back up.
Well, essentially we'd choose a book, then when everyone has it, you'd have say, a month to read it. In the meanwhile, you choose next months book, so people have a chance to buy it/get it from library, and we can have one book a month without everyone scrabbling around to try and procure said book.....
Then basically, discussgd12
First on the to do list, establish who's interested - which has basically been done.
Then - we choose a book:hyper:

Pix has some great suggestions:
The House at Riverton (http://www.amazon.co.uk/House-at-Riverton-Kate-Morton/dp/0330448447/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1199437661&sr=8-1)

I don't mind if we come up with a shortlist, and choose collectivly - or if one person chooses every month...gd12
And I'll also read most anything - except the tragic real life stories - but I think most people are with me on that....
Daffs

Similar to what daffs said; through a vote? perhaps alphabetical order a person offers3- 4 different suggestions and we all take a vote on it for the month? If it is a tie that person chooses the book.
or a shortlist :D anything is fine with me really; just want to get started so I can train myself to read more!

I want to suggest The Welsh Girl by Peter Ho Davies :D
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Welsh-Girl-Peter-Ho-Davies/dp/0340938277/ref=pd_sim_b_4_img
It's also £3.99 on amazon and is being reviewed in Richard and Judy's Book Club 2008.
I will buy 3 or 4 off the shortlist from Amazon (clicking on MZ affiliates link (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/search?ie=UTF8&tag=mumszone0a-21&index=toys-uk&linkCode=ur2&camp=1634&creative=6738)!! beforehand and hopefully get free postage too :D (but that's just what *I* will be doing)

The House at Riverton

at £3.94 (cheaper than daffs :cheesy:)
My only fear of choosing one each, is that we are likely to just vote for our own suggestion. :D

When the first book is decided, how long do we have to read it.I am going on holiday on Mon til Fri, and will need to buy one of the books suggested.
Just so looking forwars to this and don't want to be left behind.
Can I also throw in 'The Island' by Victoria Hislop, got it for christmas.
I am reading 'A place called here' by Cecilia Ahearn at the moment, and tend to be a slow reader
pix4bu
06-01-2008, 09:49 AM
I'm sure that will be fine shaz; we can remove my last choice marc haddon- as I already suggested House at Riverton; so if a majority of us are happy with those 4 books we can start poll and decide on what book to read for this month and then carry the other 3 into next month's vote (adding a 4th choice)
or simply have those on our shortlist and just start reading all four books in that order
(hope I'm not being a pain, just want to get this started :-) )

If we have a shortlist of about 4 or 5, then most of us can order from Amazon and get free delivery, rather than ordering one at a time and paying postage.
Don't know if someone is going to compile a list of everyones suggestions.
I can start
The Island Victoria Hislop
House at Riverton Kate Morton
The Welsh Girl Peter Ho Davies
Remember Me Sophie Kinsella
Half of a Yellow Sun Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche
Tell it to the Skies Erica James
Cranford Elizabeth Gaskell
Forgive and Forget Patricia Scanlon
A Spot of Bother Mark Haddon
I will try to do a poll (never done one before) and we can all vote to see if anyone has read, I don't like reading a book twice, no matter how good it is, so have ommitted all the ones people have said they have read.
Then the ones left over that no-one has read, we can order them, hopefully 4 or 5 and just get started.
Is that alright, I don't mind if anyone else has better ideas?

shaz, am excited about being in a book club; have never been in one and want to improve on my reading- so hope this will work; I'm actually also going to be part of another online book club from a food forum I visit. There's only 3 of us so it was much easier for us to decide what book to start with lol.
(only problem I have with Remember Me is that atm it's £10!) I think I will wait for that to go down in price or see if I can get hold for it for less, when the time comes.
Am happy to start with The Island- I simply just want to start lol
