i saw this on the news this morning with a dog behavioural expert who stated that it wasnt the dogs fault, it was just trying to protect its pack and this child wasnt part of the pack and so it attacked them...

make of that what you will.
I know that i was horrified to hear of this and that children are still being left unattended with dogs - i dont care how gentle and loving the dog is, i still dont think they should be left on their own. I know that we never ever leave marcs mums dog with the children unattended.. you can never be too sure and at the end of the day id rather be over cautious than grieving...

Cant agree more and i see the lady as well and did agree with her esp with the part where she said people say its my baby .............. errrmmmm no its not its a dog ,
Provide it with a place to go if you have lots of visitors coming over

This is why i voiced my concerns about the boys going to my brothers house

Im not going to get into the debate about dangerous dogs etc as i have made my feelings clear on it before but ALL dog owners should be vetted and trained before getting a dog just like all dogs need to be vetted and checked

totally agree with you! its amazing who can have a dog which can be lethal, or loving depending on their background..
Im amazed... youd like to think there was a vetting procedure or something...

And like the lady said what about cross breeds ? what part of it do you blame ? The collie type nose ? or the lab type ears ?

Dogs are wild animals not a fashion accesory (sorry crap spelling) or an ego boost

There is a guy that lives round here with 2 rottis
He walks them both along the streets off the lead which does scare the crap out of me and i do cross the street when i see them but the thing that worries me more is that one of them will go in the road and under a bus (we are on a main bus route)
This is a guy that was known to be involved with dog fighting years ago so in this instance the owner needs putting down

I wouldn't leave a child alone with any dog let alone such a powerful one, horrific, the dear little soul.

Very true! We had a woman admitted a couple of months ago, we started our shift to be told it was a dog bite. It turned out she owned a rottweiler and had gotten up in the middle of the night to get a drink when the dog attacked her. She had bites all over her back and then it went for her throat, one of the bites punctured her trachea so she was rushed up for emergency surgery and ended up in intensive care. The terrifying thing is that because the dog attacked it's registered owner it is not automatically put down, the decision is left to the owner and she refused to have him put down so basically the police know the dog is lethal but can do nothing to stop it until it attacks a member of the public.

I think that dogs that can have a vicious side need to be in the right hads with people who can train the dog properly to aviod these horrible accidents. My friend has a staffordshire bull terrior and I know that they have a bad reputation, but my friend loves dogs and has trained it properly and it is soo well behaved. I think that many of these dogs are in the wrong hands which leads to the terrible accidents. People who get these dogs to make them look 'hard' and are not training their dogs are not just putting themselves at risk, but also members of the public!

That is outrageous!

I am just furious that ANOTHER child has been killed by a dog. How many more children will be killed? I think something needs to be done and very quickly.

I know lots of people will defend Rotweillers and say they are lovely - maybe some of them are, but they are such powerful animals and a kiddie has no chance at all against one. It does always seem to be THIS breed that is on the TV having killed a child over and over again.

so the dog is known to be dangerous and has attacked so thats ok, so what we have to wait for it to attack someone else. I love animals and I think that in this instance if the dog did attack someone again then the owner needs to be put in prison.
very sad, not the end of such reports I'm sure.

the other question is, of course, was it fair to expect a 16 yr old to look after 3 children?????

All im going to say on this matter is

blame the owners not the dogs!

I have a rotti, and no she doesent get left alone with oscar at all, its rare they are even in the same room, but saying that i trust my dog more than i trust alot of people with my kids!

Hi,
Well im not going to get into a huge debate about all this as i truely am sick of having to defend my dogs & choice to own them.
My heart goes out to the parents of the little boy killed but so many questions need to be answered on this & i doubt any one will ever get the whole or true picture.
Please dont knock all rotties, mine are well trained & socialised dogs but at the end of the day people seem to forget they are dogs not humans & as such cant say how they feel etc. Saying that i dont allow children to run riot or unsupervised around my 2, they are dogs & will act like dogs. its called being a RESPONSIBLE owner.
Also in this particular instance the dog was left outside, not used to human company & suddenly faced with 2 small & no doubt noisy children, many dogs would of reacted to that as well, any size or breed can do serious damage to a 1 year old child.

A Rottie was dumped at the centre I volunteer at, not surprising really, but very sad, she's lovely. :-(
