This activity was created by Ritu Valeecha-Sood, founder of CraftyKidz (www.craftykidz.net). CraftyKidz aims to show children how enjoyable craft activities can be, in an age where technology and the television remote control threaten to take over. Bonfire night is an exciting time for kids, but not a time for youngsters to be hands-on, so a craft activity like this is a great way to get them safely involved.
How to make a Bonfire night shaker:
You will need:
A small glass or plastic jar (baby food jars or coffee jars work well)
Brightly coloured glitter/sparkly metallic shapes (available from craft shops)
Small plastic toys (animals, people, houses) to go in the bottom of your jar
Black paper/material to go round the back of your fireworks scene
What to do:
1. Glue the plastic toy(s) onto the inside of the jar lid. This will be the base of your shaker. Allow glue to dry.
2. Cut your black paper/felt to size. It will need to cover halfway round the jar to provide a dark background.
3. Use sticky tape, or glue carefully around the edges to cover half the jar with the black paper/felt. This will be the night sky background for your fireworks. You could even draw or paint a starry pattern on the paper before you attach it.
4. Pour a small amount of glitter/sparkly shapes into the jar. Don’t use too much – just enough to give a sparkly fireworks effect.
5. Fill the jar with water to the top, and place the lid on top, doing it up very tightly.
6. Shake the jar, and place it lid down, to watch the fireworks exploding over the plastic figures.
