Just wondered if anyone knew how puppies locate their mother when they are still deaf and blind, I've read that they have heat sensors in their face, I've also read that they have an infra-red sensor in their nose.
Does anyone know for sure which is right?
Googling hasn't got me very far. :cheesy:
Thanks a lot, it's not essential but I want to include it in my essay.
Cheers doggy people!!! :kisshands:

sorry hun, don't have a clue! i was asking dh the other day if dogs always know if they meet one of their 'relatives', would they know for example, if they met their mum again when they were no longer puppies? or if they even know when they see the same breed as themselves that they are the same? sorry i've waffled and i've not helped you one bit, sorry hun xxxxxx

Thanks, I think it is by smell once the mother has licked them and got her scent on them, but I think there is another way too, maybe not though. Thanks :kisshands:

Yep they would! Dogs can remember a scent for life, so sniffing one dog once, they will remember the dog if they ever smell it again, or if they smell something with its scent on.
Erm I know that some dogs dislike other dogs because of their breed so I assume they know the difference, although it could just be the difference in size or something rather than breed.
It's ok, no problem, I love talking about dogs!:kisshands:

how interesting! thanks for that hun! samson is great with some dogs and not with others, you can see his fur stand up on the back of his shoulders when he is unsure of a dog and funnily enough, it happens with all other labradors, it maybe because he was bitten by a chocolate lab? he used to live with another dog before we had him and i did wonder if he would know who he was if he met him again....i could talk about doggies all day too!!! x x x

It could be yeah, he now has a negative association with other labs, aww bless him. Is he ok when he gets to know them?
