Just gone to feed DD2's hamster and I think its dying. Its come out of its bed and is just lying in the cage and although its tummy is still going it wont move. It also for some reason looks a lot bigger than normal which is strange. I dont think it will last till the morning and dd2 is at a friends and will be heartbroken when she knows

I have noticed the last couple of days that he isnt eating or drinking as much. He is probably about 2.5 years

aaawww, does sound like he's about to catch the bus to furry heaven. This brings back memories of my fuzzface who passed to furry heaven this time last year. I'd better warn you Toni, the hamster may survive for another week but not be able to eat or drink properly, all you can do is make him as confortable as possible and try feeing him watery foods such as tomato or any other very soft food. Try giving water on a teaspoon so he can just lick at it. Poor little hamster is in my thoughts and prayers

TY. DH is going to take our little hammie to the vets in the morning if its the same though as I dont want him to suffer and from what I have read he is quite an age for a hamster. DH just took a look and he has gone back into his bed now.

I never took mine to the vet as i thought the 'going to sleep' injection would have been way too much stress for them, with both of mine I said to them 'don't be scared, if it's time for you to go, just go' and within 30 minutes they had taken their last breath.

2.5 years is a good age for a hamster, Herbie lived to that age, think it's over 100 in human years.

Aww - sorry to hear this ....

Think the hammies we had only lived a couple of years ... but they can hibernate, and my mum still thinks she may have consigned one of ours to the "dustbin" (what! we said later when we were older!!) when he may have been only sleeping!!!!

He didnt make it through the night. DH came down today and he was half in half out of his bed. He has put him in a nice box with bedding and is going to bury him in the garden with dd2 today, who has just got back from her friends and was very upset when I told her.

That's a shame Toni. How's DD taking it-or doesn't she realise how bad hamster is?

She was very upset but we are trying to distract her. She is getting a new bed (anyone want to buy one of the tall metal beds..lol) so we have got her looking for one she likes.

Hi.

Hope your DD is feeling a little happier today, it's horrible when a pet dies, One of Ds's mice died a few weeks ago and he was devestated, got him a couple of new babies and he is a lot happier now. His ham died when one of his friends threw him up in the air and he landed on the floor, needless to say that she is no longer allowed to handle the animals. Wish I hadn't replaced her with a male though as now we are expecting babies.

I always use to have hamsters, once on one very embarrassing occasion I took my Hammie to the vet as she had what looked like a very large growth on her rear end.
So there I am sat in the waiting room with this little cardboard box that housed Nellie.
I was called in the consultation room where I carefully removed Nellie from her box and cautiously pointed out to the vet the offensive lump. I then began to explain that I really didn’t want Nellie to suffer and if it was a tumour then I would prefer that she would be put to sleep peacefully.
The vet then looked at me in a very sympathetic way and said. ‘I really don’t think that will be necessary, that is no tumour its HIS testicles.
Very red faced I placed NELSON back into HIS cardboard box and made a very sharp exit.
