I was looking for a book in Asda this morning whist shopping and in the top 20 books, the majority of them were about troubled childhoods, abuse, exploitation and lots by Tory Hayden (selective mute children usually due to abuse)

Well it really put me off, I know this goes on, but why are these books so popular?

I like to read in bed to wind down and find books entertaining, but I don't go for the Girly books or horror, but like something with a bit of depth.
These books would just make me so sad, I would never get to sleep.

What do you think?

I will usually read anything - I love reading but with everything piling up lately I don't want a book that will make me think, I want it handed to me on a plate (same applies to moves atm!) give me some fluff, chick lit and I'm happy!
The sad books suck me in and leave me feeling so upset, I wonder how people can do that to children and I'm left exhausted (because I didn't want to put the book down so have been up most of the night reading) and depressed.

I read whatever takes my fancy at the time and picked up a Torey Hayden book the other day called Just Another Kid. Its not the kind of book I would normally go for really either but must say I really enjoyed it and will make a point of reading her others. It was sad and made me cry at one point but it was also the kind of book that you couldn't put down until you have finished.
