One of our rabbits is poorly, will have to go to the vet on monday, dh was looking at the rabbits the other day and he said ' that rabbits got no eyes' I had a look and it looked like he had no eyes, have been giving it eyedrops and kept it inside, dont know if it is myxomatosis actually but they dont go out in the garden and the others are all ok, dh thinks that maybe little ds has poked him with a stick when i was putting washing out, or maybe has an eye infection. Any ideas

are the rabbits eyes cloudy/opaque ? if so it's possibly a bit of hay or something that has got stuck round the eye (happened to my guinea pig and antibiotic drops cleared it up), keep a very close eye on the rabbit (no pun intended, sorry), is the rabbit still eating and drinking normally, do it's dropping look normal ? if you answer no to any of these get it straight to a vet

its still eating and drinking but its started making funny breathing noises, it was like its eyes were shut but when we gave it some eye drops it seemed to get a bit better and eyes are open but look sore, i still dont think little ds would have poked him in both eyes with a stick, (he has this habbit of running round the garden with a stick from the runner beans) its running around and standing on 2 legs still

I know it will cost you but please get the rabbit to a vet asap, it could possibly be snuffles (pasteurella) which can make the rabbit decline quite rapidly if not treated, i hope and pray it is not Myxomatosis.

just googled this in case ---------- At first, normally the disease is visible by lumps (myxomata) and puffiness around the head and genitals. It then may progress to acute conjunctivitis and possibly blindness however this also may be the first indication of the disease. The rabbits become listless, lose appetite, and develop a fever. Secondary bacterial infections occur in most cases which cause pneumonia and purulent inflammation of the lumps.if your rabbit has anything like this you had best get intouch with an emergancy vet. do you just have the one rabbit because if not it is possible that the others may get it too.

You know don't you, that Mixi won't actually kill the poor fella, you just need to make sure he can find his food ok.....

no it does kill them within 14days if they wasnt inoculated in the first place, and last night a hedgehog sneaked in the door when i was fetching washing in and scared me and the rabbit to death. He's eating ok and running about just looks so sad
The classic form of myxomatosis is seen in rabbits that haven’t been vaccinated. It is a dreadful disease that causes immense suffering: affected rabbits can take a fortnight to die and treatment is usually futile, which is why euthanasia is usually recommended.
Classic myxomatosis starts with runny eyes and in the very early stages can be confused with other causes of conjunctivitis but in addition, the genitals are also swollen. It rapidly progresses to a severe conjunctivitis which causes blindness and is accompanied by swelling of the head and genital region, plus lumps on the body. Thick pus discharges from the nose and swollen eyes. There are also two atypical forms of myxomatosis: one causes pneumonia and a snuffles-like illness; the other ("Nodular myxomatosis") mainly affects skin and carries a better prognosis.
If a vaccinated rabbit develops myxomatosis, the disease is usually much less severe. The exact pattern of disease seen in vaccinated animals is very variable, and impossible to predict: it depends upon how much immunity the rabbit has. Some rabbits develop just a few odd skin lesions and remain otherwise well; others become quite poorly and suffer from swellings and conjunctivitis more like classical myxomatosis. The difference is that vaccination turns a fatal illness into one that is treatable

we are sure it is from all the floodwater
"High risk" areas typically include any low-lying areas (e.g. East Englia; vale of York) plus anywhere with standing water; a large mosquito population; or local outbreaks of myxi in wild rabbits. If you hear of a myxi outbreak in your vicinity, it would be wise to ensure your bunny has been vaccinated within the previous 6 months.
