Former Northern Ireland Secretary Mo Mowlam has died, aged 55.

She went into hospital at the end of July before being moved to a hospice. It was unclear if her illness was linked to her previous brain tumour.

Ms Mowlam, Labour MP for Redcar between 1987-2001, oversaw the talks which led to the 1998 Good Friday Agreement.

As an MP Ms Mowlam was a popular and charismatic figure, known for her sense of humour. She leaves husband, merchant banker turned painter, Jon Norton.

It said on the news that she had fallen and banged her head and never regained consciousness. Apparently her radiation treatment had left her with balance problems.

She had a living will saying she didnt want resuscitation.

It is such a shame when a truely likable person dies before their time

Only the good die young and Mo was definately one of the good one's. She shone through with her wit, honesty and she always seemed to have time for others unlike some of the other MP's we have.

RIP Mo.

I'd heard a week or so ago that she'd been admitted to hospital but no details were released.

She was such a brave woman.

RIP Mo.

She will be sadly missed by almost every person in Northern Ireland. SHe was one of the few MP's who truly cared about the situation here and did her best to help to resolve it. I can honestly say that without her efforts I wouldn't be able to live in Northern Ireland with my family close by (because I married a protestant and mixed marriages were not very popular with the terrorist groups). So thank you and a sad goodbye to a remarkable woman.
