I am thinking of having my new kitten microchipped but I am a bit confused about it. What information does the microchip contain.

I assume it would have the kittens name, my name, address and phone number. Is this right? If so what happens if we move house or change phone number? Is it worth doing? What happens if I microchipped my kitten and she did get lost?

I know that they scan the kitten and the information comes up but would whoever found her have to take her to a vets for this to happen?

Any information gratefully received.

You will fill in a large form with all your information about you and kitty, if someone hands the cat in at the vets/resuce centre scan them and all the information you handed over will come up on the database. This way they can contact you to come and get kitty!

It is worth doing as cats do go wandering off and can get knocked down by cars and if its not chipped they will have no way of contacting you. Yes it might have a collar but that might get taken off or lost.

A friend has had their puppy chipped - when it escaped under the gate (yes that small!) and a neighbour found it, she called the number on the collar, confirming it was chipped, and was told it would be over an hour before they could come out to scan the pup.

In the meantime, friend's son was out looking for the dog and saw this lady carrying it ...

I think the chip is an RFID chip, it contains ONLY a unique ID

they look that up on the computer database (probably automatically) to find out your details, so you don't need to change the chip if you move, simply inform the people who run the DB

kind of like a bar code

i woud def recommend it, my dog is microchipped. Everytime she goes to the vet they scan it to make sure its working.

it holds information regarding the animal, and also that of your registered vet.

Thanks for the information. I have rang the vets and arranged to get it done on Monday as she is getting her injections then so I may as well get it done at the same time. I am getting the basic one done but I am not quite sure what the difference is. The receptionist said something about her temperature gets checked with the more advanced one, which I found even more confusing!! But as long as all my information is there then that is all that matters.
