does anyone know how to go about setting up a direct debit scheme...where I can request regular/variable payment from clients

Your best bet would be to go to your bank and they can point you in the right direction.

thanks for that Colette.Spoke to someone at Abbey who was clueless and couldn;t help, but have contacted BACS who run direct debts, and say that they can find the right person at Abbey who will know what they are talking about! FIngers crossed

Jeeez banks are useless arent they?? You cant believe that the self employed have to actually PAY for their rubbish *services*

You could get your customers to set up a regular standing order, but it would be up to them to vary the amount if needed

useless is the word! you'd thnk they'd like regular payment s into my account!

have done STO's up till now, but want something I can control....I had a client who wouldn't cancel her STO even when the work was finished, which was a pita - cos money was still coming in, but i couldnt spend it!!! kept having to refund her
