Sounds like you have your hands full.

From what I remember ours was 12 weeks when we got him and we were still having accidents until we moved house about 6 months after we had him. His was mostly at night though as during the day the door was left open so he could come and go as he pleased.

I know it sounds a bit silly but have you tried training him to go on demand. So when he goes and does his business you say the command like "be clean", then when he has learnt the command you just tell him to go and don't have to wait around for him to do his thang.

What breed is he?

i have thought about it and my friend has done that with her jack russell, she just says have a wee wee and he does, its great! but then she does treat him like a baby, i just dont have time to treat him like a child!!! he is a patterdale terrier. i think we are getting there. oh that reminds me, i need to go and get some more puppy training mats!!!

Unfortunately at 16 weeks he is still a child even though he is a dog. Dogs need you to be their pack leader and he will look to you for direction so you may have to treat him like a child you are potty training for a while. By now his bladder is growing so he should be able to go at least an hour between wees. Get yourself an alarm clock with a bell or something and set it hourly, when it goes off take him outside and tell him "whatever phrase you are going to use" eg be clean or have a wee. If he does it give him lots of praise. Then the next day do it every hour and half if he is dry between times. Gradually leave it longer and longer between his regular trips out. He will get it eventually. At night make sure there is paper/pads down. as he gets older move them nearer to the back door or wherever he goes out of to go to wee until you are left with one pad/piece of paper - by this point his bladder shoud be big enough to last him through the night!

If he has a crate/cage type bed (really useful as gives dog their own space) then he is unlikely to wee in there as they do not normally go in their sleep areas.

Hope this helps!

I totally agree. When we got our dog at 8 weeks old I managed to train him in 10 days by doing the above. I made sure he went out - I physically took him out and stood with him- every hour or so, after every meal and after playing with him or when he'd got excited.
At night I would cover the kitchen floor with newspaper then remove it one sheet each night til there was just one sheet left by the back door so if he really needed to go in the night he would do it on that one sheet. Then I removed that sheet and he would cry if he needed to go and soon was going the whole night dry. And its not as though he is an intelligent dog - hes a Labrador and the thickest animal I've ever come across so it really is a miracle he got the hang of house training, esp as 4 years on the only other command he knows is 'sit'!!

Good luck, you've got your hands full. However, it is easier than having another child - just. Only because animals can't answer you back

He is very young still. I am afraid that they do say sometimes they are not fully trained until 6 months. With us it was true and sometimes Dougal would still do something inside up until 6 months.

I am very strict with my dog and I use the 'be clean' command your not treating him like a child your being the boss and telling him what you want him to do. How does he know what you want him to do if you don't tell him? I can now be out on a walk with him and tell him to be clean because theres a bin near me!

I used to have a patterdale, They are very intelligent and learn very quick, it took me 2 weeks to house train her, After every meal and waking up you take him outside, straight away! stand in the garden with door shut untill eventually he does something, when he does praise him really over the top ie cuddles high pitch good boy and carry on like this and it will become routein, when puppy is bad ie does it indoors ignore him do NOT say a word, the dog dosnt understand what you are saying anyway, this will teach him he only gets attention when he does it in the garden!! it does work though it is hard work and unfortunatly puppies do not come gift wrapped lol. good luck any problems pm me if you like. xx
