Just finished reading-Only a mother could love him-
From Publishers Weekly
Diagnosed at age eight with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Australian Polis bullies classmates, downs a power line with a fishing spear on a family vacation and is suspended for stunts like molding a face that resembles a ***** in art class. "ADHD kids just don't understand the concept of being subtle," he observes. The first two-thirds of this book, written when Polis was 19, recall his harrowing school days and family life in Melbourne. The last third, written more recently (he's now 23), is more a primer for parents of ADHD kids, particularly boys. Now better able to cope, Polis discusses how and when to use medication, how to teach ADHD children to enjoy reading, and other related issues. Many of Polis's former teachers and classmates are surprised that he graduated from college and is now an author. "It only took six schools, five thousand detentions, three hundred days of suspension and a case of Ritalin," he says dryly. He also had a supportive family, good private school teachers and a caring psychiatrist. There are many guides to managing ADHD, but this powerful inside account is unique.

From Booklist
The title conjures grandmothers whispering together, for it suggests being born in an era when such terms as special needs child didn't exist. Yet Polis, now 19, was such a child, a hard-to-manage boy with attention deficit disorder. His story, one of great hope, tallies the many different schools he attended and the thousands of hours of detention he served as a boy whom teachers labeled problem and who couldn't read a short sentence until he was 11. But he went on to graduate from high school, attend a university, and write this book to supplement medical texts on ADD/ADHD by showing how he overcomes everyday problems in everyday situations. If his early history of distractibility and impulsiveness includes such horrors as, at age four, crushing a neighbor's dog during an ill-fated Evel Knievel stunt (one of several behaviors that drove his entire family into therapy), it yields to strategies for success that will help health-care professionals and lay persons alike, no less here than it has in Polis' homeland, Australia. I am re-reading "The Cot Death Cover up?" by Jim Sprott. (Penguin Books)
This book can be found in most local libraries. The book is also loaned out free of charge from the UK Cot Life Society.
Written and published in 1996
Cot death is a major killer of British babies, but medical science doesn't know why.
By the end of the year over 400 babies may have died, leaving grief - stricken parents and families to mourn their loss forever. Prevention of these tragic deaths seem to elude orthodox medical researchers. Although the 'Back to sleep' campaign has reduced a number of cot deaths, too many are still occurring.
Jim Sprott believes he knows what causes cot death; he believes the public has a right to know, too.
In Britain this theory is the subject of a government inquiry - in his home country of New Zealand it is largely ignored. Is there some sort of cover up, and if so, why? In this provocative and important book, Jim Sprott, consulting chemist and forensic scientist, explains the theory and gives simple advice to prevent cot death.
Famous for the forensic research that led to a Royal Pardon for Arthur Allan Thomas, twice convicted for murder, Jim Sprott has had a lifetime full of scientific and professional achievements.
This book is the result of a campaign by three men: a British Scientist, a British businessman and Jim himself. He tells the story of their research and campaign.
Jim Sprott is a highly respected consulting chemist and forensic scientist. During his wide-ranging career he has been involved in forensic work relating to some of New Zealand's most famous criminal cases. In 1995 he was awarded the OBE for services to forensic science and the community. He has been researching the cause of cot death for over fifteen years.
(Bearing in mind the book was published in 1996 - Jim Sprott has now dedicated almost 25 years of his life to cot death)

Don't know if anyone else has read it but I recently finished 'The Lovely Bones' by Alice Sebold. My dad lent me it but didn't warn me that it would make me weep hysterically every other paragraph. Basically it is about a teenaged girl who gets murdered and is narrated from her perspective looking down on her family - it definately makes you appreciate what you have and the ones you love. You will need boxes of tissues but it manages to combine tragedy and humour really well

Shelby........... this is the bit thats written about My sisters keeper..........
One of those books that you just want to keep on reading..........
"A major decision about me is being made, and no one's bothered to ask the one person who most deserves it to speak her opinion." The only reason Anna was born was to donate her cord blood cells to her older sister. And though Anna is not sick, she might as well be. By age thirteen, she has undergone countless surgeries, transfusions, and shots so that her sister, Kate, can somehow fight the leukemia that has plagued her since she was a child. Anna was born for this purpose, her parents tell her, which is why they love her even more. But now that she has reached an age of physical awareness, she can't help but long for control over her own body and respite from the constant flow of her own blood seeping into her sister's veins. And so she makes a decision that for most would be too difficult to bear, at any time and at any age. She decides to sue her parents for the rights to her own body.

I'm reading "The Blood-Dimmed Tide" by Rennie Airth. Its a murder mystery set in 1932 and is quite page turning. I only started to read it cos I had nothing else to do and just looked in my book case for something I haddent read yet!...
"John Madden may have retired from Scotland Yard, but his instincts are still those of the excellent copper he once was. When a girl is murdered he his convinced that this is a methodically planned attack by someone who will almost certainly strike again. Soon he is helping his former collegues in their investigations, desperatly hunting the killer before he goes to ground again.

I bought the Niall McKenzie one for my dad along with the Steve Hislop one, he enjoyed them both but found the Steve Hislop one quite inspirational. His favourite was Joey Dunlop's!
I have just finished Tuesdays with Morrie for oour Book Club, I can't decide if I enjoyed or not. It was written by the same guy who wrote Five People You Meet in Heaven.....Mitch somebody and it was about him and him meeting his old university lecturer, who was dying from disease called ALS (Stephen Hawkings has this). Wasn't he just - never had the pleasure of seeing him race in Isle of Man though my dad has a few times. He was just a lovely bloke as well as being King of the Road!
I met him once at the TT he was really down to earth and couldn't believe people let him go racing and paid him for it. Sorry to digress but i am sure he is sadly missed very year on the island and evrywhere else.

im reading Bette and Joan; The Divine Fuede. all about bette davis and joan crawford and their dislike of each other. its quite interesting. like to know what goes on in the lives of the rich and famous.
also, as its not bias to one actress, you get to see what they were both like. warts and all!!!

I've just finished The Traveller by John Twelve Hawks
excellent book with some interesting social commentary about our surveilance society woven into a tense thriller with a fascinating, almost sci-fi or mystical genre involving "out of body" "travellers"!

Currently reading a brilliant book called The Island - Victoria Hislop which is set on the old leper colony island of Spinalonga in Crete. Picked it up and realised it was all about this island and the village across the water called Plaka which I stayed at on holiday about 6 years ago. Great read

I am reading The Dark by James Herbert, but as it got a bit too scary last night I swapped over to my other current read 'A Spanish Lover' by Joanna Trollope.
I am reading books that I have read already because I've run out of new books to read and I havent seen anything on the shelves I fancied!
So any recommendations would be great!

I just finished reading Shopaholic Abroad (love Sophie Kinsella) and I was about to start My Sister's Keeper when I decided that I didn't want to read a sad book and could do with a uplifting book, so might go on to the next Shopaholic book!

Bought a bunch of books yesterday at Ottakars as they had a whole section of 'Try me for 99p' so I bought several of those and then some others that were half price or £2.99, etc.
I bought:
The Purpose Driven Life, Rick Warren
The Miniature Man, R Muir
The English Harem, Anthony McCarten
A Life's Music, Andrei Makine
The Sweet Forever, George P Pelecanos
Tennyson's Gift, Lynne Truss
Going Loco, Lynne Truss
and the one I started reading last night 'Medium' by Allison DuBois
Torey Haydens 'Beautiful Child'

I finished 'Medium'. Was kind of disappointed to be honest.
Am now reading another book I bought this weekend which was £1 which is about the Kabbalah (not the Madonna version but the ancient religion). So far its very interesting!
