I reckon people smoking near me contravenes my human right to not have to breathe their stale smoke. Yuk! As a life long non-smoker, and someone who really gets affected by cigarette, cigar and pipe smoke I can't wait for this new law.

As an ex-smoker I have mixed feelings about the ban.
When you walk out of a building into a street filled with people smoking it smells worse than if you were stood inside with all the smoke, doesnt look pleasant and leaves a mess on the floor - no ashtrays outside. But it will be nice not to have to struggle with not smoking when I do get to go out!
I stopped on 12 January!

I think the ban has gone too far, why can pubs ect not choose if they want to be smoke free and pay a fee or something to do so, I have never smoked and hate being around someone who is smoking but I don't think it is fair on smokers to ban them from everywhere.

I'm an ex-smoker 2, & I haven't got any problem with ppl smoking...as u know EEA! BUT I AM looking forward 2 not needing a shower the minute I get in from the pub in the evening!
I wish I could get a ban on my neighbour smoking in her back garden tho, cos it comes right in my bedroom window & I can smell it as clear as if she were in the room with me!
well i can't wait for the ban to start... It will be nice to be able to go out for a pub lunch and be able to take dd with us.
I can't see how they can say the ban contravenes human rights... they are still allowed to smoke.. its not a total ban!

i am a smoker..
i think that having a mix would have been better maybe.. allowing some places to still be smoking and others to be smoke free??
I dont know, wont bother me that much tbh as i dont go out anyway!!! LOL

I'm an ex smoker too, though I will sometimes have one if Im in the company of smokers but that's not often, and only if I'm on my own, not with the children or dh.
Anyway, I'm pleased that smoking is no longer going to happen in pubs etc because although I'm not opposed to the odd one, I hate the smell of stale smoke on my clothes and hair after I've been in a pub.
I've noticed however that in the pubs in town they have attatched ashtray things to the outside walls by the doors. I suppose that means that instead of everyone sitting inside smoking you'll have to walk through the smoke to gain entry into the place.

i am all for the ban tbh but what annoys me more is the nanny state and the moving of the goalposts...once upon a time it was the government giving cigarettes in rations, advertising it and making it out to be glamorous.....as they have slowly realised the dangers of it they now want to reverse and take it all away again....this is where it is wrong! i have given up smoking, mainly because of the ban, and for all the other obvious health/money reasons so it has done me good but for others who want to smoke it is unfair to ban it from everywhere....i think there should be pubs where people can smoke and then we can all make a choice, and making people smoke outside is just as bad tbh!!! as for the mess it will create with cigarette ends etc....the wardens are out in force, only a few months ago my sister got fine £70 for dropping hers!!!! and i wondered what the government would do without all the revenue from the sales of cigarettes........wrong, wrong, wrong!!!

I'm an ex smoker and tbh people smoking (as long as its not right next to me or my children) does not bother me.
I think they are starting to take this too far though - I've heard things like, if a council official visits your home, you aren't allowed to smoke in their presence. Now ok, most people wouldn't do that anyway, but for the people that did - suddenly because there is someone else in their home, they aren't allowed to light up?! And the same goes for cars - I've heard thats going to be the next one.
I do find it strange how you always have to walk through the smoking section to get to the non smoking at the moment, in a lot of restaurants/pubs, but I do think there should be the choice made available.
Can you imagine pubs and clubs of an evening now where so many people are going to be standing outside having a cig, drunk, and no doubt end up having more punch ups than there was before (possibly, just a thought like)

The smoking ban has been in place here since the end of April and any time I have been out most pubs have provided an outdoor area for smokers so they're not on the street and I haven't noticed any extra trouble. It's been great to go out and not spend the next day with a sore chest, coughing and to have your clothes stinking of smoke.

We have had the smoking ban for over a year now and it has worked really well. Having seperate smoking and non-smoking rooms just doesn't work - if you were out in mixed company guess what room you would end up in!
It's not as if smokers are being told they can't smoke, they just have to smoke outside. I fed up hearing about human rights blah, blah, it's a load of crap! What about the human rights of the non-smoker who has to breath in passive smoke and as for that old trollop who was on GMTV this morning trying to say that passive smoking was not proven, she should take a long, hard look in the mirror just to see the damage that smoking has done to her face! Passive smoking or not, it's just the smell that gets me, I hated my clothes and hair stinking of stale smoke and my eyes were really sore for days after I had been in a smoky pub (not that I done it all that often).
I am just glad that it is happening in England this weekend as we are going on holiday there tomorrow.................although it is to Yorkshire so even though we are not having to contend with smokers we have flood waters to deal with! And before anyone says we are used to this sort of weather up here in Scotland, I can assure you that we never get that sort of weather in the central belt.
Roll on 1st July!!

I can't wait to start going out again - smoking always makes me ill and spoils my night - I can safely take my family out too!

I've been delighted as my sister is a singer and the smoky atmosphere wasn't helping her voice at all. She has noticed a massive difference since the ban.

The smoking ban has been in for a few months in Wales now. My dd works behind a bar and has found it much better for her. I don't like trying to have a bar meal in a pub which is smoky, and when we went to Pontins earlier this year, we couldn't stay in the club cos it was so bad.
I have nothing against smokers. Most are, on the whole, considerate of others. Antony Worrall-Thompson was on GMTV this week - he was a laugh! He was just ranting!
Congrats to all of you who are now ex-smokers. My dh has been an ex-smoker for seven years now. (He did it with the Allen Carr book)

I have never smoked but I do think the ban is a good idea especially when you walk around the shops I get so worried when people hold their fags down which children can easily walk into it. It happened to my niece a few years ago and nearly happened to ds several times.I also get fed up of the smell walking from in the shop to the fresh air (haha not in Salisbury) all the bored husbands waiting for wives puffing away. I do thinkin some pubs you should smoke and it is the nonsmokers choice to go in there.

I dont agree with it, What happened to human rights? if they cared that much about our health they would take cars off the road as every day we are breathing in toxic fumes just by walking down the road!! but noone does anything about that do they?? Its just a way for them to control us, If they really dont want people to smoke then they should make the sale of ciggies illegal that way it would make more sense. :cursin:

I am not really for or against the ban
as I mentioned above I'd rather my dd not to be surrounded my smoke - so I took her to places that no one smoked, although when I did not have her it did not bother me all that much going into a pub with smoking (after I gave up)
Ban has been in place a little while now in Wales and I can still walk through town and get smoke blown in my face from the kind person in front.

Its not going to affect me because as from monday I WILL BE a non smoker but not because of the bastards that run this goverment are restricting me (i dont go out so it wont affect me) but because my son has asked me to give up and thats the most incentive i have ever been given in my life the words coming from his mouth and asking me because he says it will make me die
But i can see both side of the argument i for one WILL NOT smoke in a plcae where people are eating its down right dissrespectful (imo) the same as if there are kids there
But then just lately i think why should people go into a club and have to put up with all the smoke from smokers (if they are non smokers) as well as the dry ice machines etc its like forcing a drug into them just becuase they want a good night out (imo)
Come on guys people complian about people smoking joints but they are safer than fags as far less chemicals (imo) (not that i smoke it as i dont and never will)
Sorry im cranky tonight ignore me but what i will say is the one worry i do have is this
A lot of people i know have/are giving up so what the hell is this goverment gonna up the tax on to compensate because when all is said and done i really dont think the goverment gives a toss about whats good for us its all about how much money they can get from the likes of us
The people that cant afford council tax and rent etc they chucked in prison when perverts are running free and then their bins are only getting emptied once a fortnight and they are paying through the nose for it
Im sorry but this country is crap and has been for some time and if i could get out of it i would as our goverment are interested in one thing and thats theirselves sod everyone else
Im sorry didnt meant to go on ill shut up now lol

If you want to smoke then go on ahead - it has already been said smokers are not being told to not smoke but that they should go outside to do so. I don't have a problem with smokers but what about my human rights to be able to go out for a night and not have my lungs polluted with someone elses smoke. It really annoys me when people seem to think human rights give them the right to make other people ill.

Collette love! you are missing my point, do you not realise you are walking down the street breathing in toxic fumes by just breathing!!! Are you a driver? if so where is my human rights to breath fresh air?? people dont think about that do they? Dont worry im cool with smoking outside, I always do anyway and i dont often go out to the pub so really it dosnt affect me, i was just saying though its a bit weird they are so concerned about our health that they ban smoking but not enough to stop other pollutents that are damaging our health!!. Maybe there should be smoking pubs and non smoking pubs that way people would have a choice?? 20061008

Personally i agree with every on eto an extent. Non smokers have the right to be in a smoke free place BUT smokers should have the right to smoke too and not just out side, i can see it leading to smokers ending up in hospital with other complaints from standing in the cold. It doesnt affect me as i never go out. But y should non smokers be allowed a nice smoke free place in the warm when smokers arent? I think some pubs should be non smokeing and some smoking.
If every smoker in this country gave up smoking the government would lose so much money in taxes that everyone elses would go up ten fold.
