View Full Version : Nappy Rash Out of Control

Just a bit of a rant really.
Dd has now had for over 3 weeks very sore red inflamed nappy rash espicially on the entrance to her vagina.
The HV has seen it and originally said it was thrush, she then looked at the sores and said that it wasn't thrush and perscribed Timodene.
It's red and inflammed and has been weeping.
We have tired lots of things
She has had loads of nappy off time, as she has good bladder control and can go an hour without doing a wee. Going to have to take her to the GP as she has 3 large sores which open and have on occasion started to weep. I thought we had it under control but not.
When she is in nappies I have been doing frequent changes as she hasn't been with the childminder for over a week.
She doesn't have juice, I cloth wipes and others use unscented wet wipes
We have tried
vaseline
some barrier cream from friendly baby on top of perscribed stuff
metanium
timodene
nothing
I am very worried that she will scar as one of the sores has been there so long.
My childminder says I should put her is a disp
She has really had so much time out of a nappy as much as is possible. She has even had a change in the night.
I'm really at my wits end I have never seen this with either of the boys before
Thanks for reading

have you tried egg white, gentle cover her sore areas in egg white and allow it to dry naturally, my mum used to swear by it.
Hope it clears up soon for her, and for you x

right love, i assume you have plain flour!
Clean the area,
then
cover in a thick layer of metanium, cover that in plain flour.
Leave, then change and repeat.
Also put her in a salt bath, that will really help and will clean out things too...
Dont blaim yourself, some babies just get it worse than others.
we have used Kamillosan, Bepanthen, Sudocrem and vaseline for nappy rash.
my sister used to use cooled chamomile tea instead of water for her resuable wipes at nappy changes.
hope you fine something that works soon

thanks will try the tea (hope I have some)
Suzi, have tried metanium and flour it worked for a while but no sure now, the sores heal and then get weepy again.
I'm even staying in more so she can run around without her nappy on, and tonight I'm going to do a late night nappy change.
Someone is for sure going to say it is because she is in cloth, they always say that.
Just put some egg white on her
I guess it is just time, she is back with the Childminder on Wednesday so she will be back to 2/3 changes.
I'm going to be very firm with childminder and give her plenty of nappies and insist that she changes more than twice a day. I'm sure her lack of changes hamper any progress I make.

What a complete nightmare for you - I really do sympathise.
R is getting to grips with solids and for us it is the poo that can start the rashes off - really is toxic stuff.
I use sudocrem on nappy rash - I use kamillosan (sp?) or weleda usually but when there is a flare up I use that and it usually seems to sort it out within a couple of days.
I agree with nappy off time too and changing maybe every hour or so until you see an improvement.
Really hope it sorts itself out - please post back with an update.

Urgh nappy rash can be horrible, and I know what you mean about feeling bad about it. Both of my girls have had terrible nappy rashes when teething, and with particular foods - I wrote an article about it here (http://www.baby-bean.com/nappy-rash-causes-cures-a-3.html) after a lot of worrying that being in cloth was making matters worse. In fact I need to update it, as I've picked up more top remedies this time around. Egg white does seem to work well for healing up the open sores, and a dab of lavender oil will help too. Bepanthen is best cream I've found, Sainsburys stock it. You're right about needing to be strict with the childminder, as 2 changes a day will not be enough.
Hugs!

How is she doing MamaB? did you put the egg white on as it was, or do you need to whisk it up a bit to make it firmer. (or will that make meringue )
Jodie's got it bad too..she screams and shake when you try and wipe her, i can just feel the pain..not nice

Try vasogen. U will have to ask for it in boots as they normally dont put it on the shelf, normally in the draws behind the till. It is the best stuff i have ever seen. And you only need a small amount.

she seems to have been ok, put egg white on 3 times and had her nappy off as much as we could, also gave her a bath with salt in.
I've also gone back to trying sudocrem on.
Its's still red but the skin has gone quite dry now and is a bit flaky, she has 3/4 big spots which look like they have had pus. She isn't too bad with it but she hasn't been sleeping very well so I am guessing that, maybe it's sore at night. I'm going to change her later.
It hasn't got worse I don't think, but it has not got better. The washing machine us very busy at the moment as I'm trying to keep up as we are changing her lots, also using plain water with cloth wipes.
Bless her she is really good
Thanks for all the advice BB will read the article

poor lamb, that sounds horribly painful - I second the camomile tea though, my little boy had terrible nappy rash a couple of times and we tried everything! The camomile tea worked a treat though - I even put a used teabag in his nappy LOL! It worked though

Oh hun your poor DD - I hate it when people blame reusables though - nappy rash can occur with reusables or with disposables, so don't blame yourself (DS3 used to get awful nappy rash with disposabled, but so far touch wood, has been ok in reusables).
It sounds like you are doing all the right things - most of all, definitely be firm with your childminder though as otherwise all of your hard work this week will be thrown out of the window.
Let us know how it goes at the docs
My dd used to get nappy rash badly , and i was using disposables. I used to absolutely cake her in sudocrem at night and it did clear it up but your dd's does sound much worse. I can't suggest anythiong els ethat hasnt been suggested.
I hope the doctor can help and it heals soon.

Oh sounds horrid. The barrier cream would only really work to prevent nappy rash. It will help soothe existing nappy rash, and should help prevent it from getting any worse, but it doesn't really clear it up as successfully as something like the better botty balm. I doubt even silk liners would help much if it is that bad.
Egg white often helps with mild nappy rash, but I haven't heard of it working on a rash as bad as this one sounds. It is so annoying when you get HV prescribing the wrong thing as it makes you feel like you've wasted your time.
I've generally not heard of sudocrem having much effect either. Lots of people swear by metanium if natural remedies don't work. I would use it if I needed to as a last resort.
Don't let them try to tell you it is because she is in cloth. There is no evidence to suggest that babies wearing disposables get any less nappy rash!
Do let us know how she is doing.

well it is yukky and dry and flaky this morning, still very red and lumpy, she had a nappy change at midnight as she woke up crying so I had one all ready plus washed her with the cammoile tea.
She is running around without a nappy on and has had egg white(non whipped Andrea) on her noo noo)
Will maybe put a wee bit of tea tree oil on.
Nappies all made up and ready, and nappies in machine.
fingers crossed can get appt today.

Oh bless her!
Erin has had it bad recently too. Really annoys me when people say it's reusables.... how can they say disposables will help with all those gel chemicals? er der!
Jake had it terribley and he was in sposies.
So far the metanium is helping with Erin. She suddenly started wetting lots heavier and teething so these are to blame! I have change her night nappies to 2 parts instead of my minkis (that i loved) for better absorbancy and more breathability.
Silk Liners are supposed to be good for nappy rash, you can get them on babykind.
Hope her noonoo is better soon! It must be so uncomfortable for them x x

I tell you all this nappy changing is very hectic.
Ready for telling childminder to increase nappy changes, I mean I do pay her!

Dry and flaky may well be a sign that it's healing up a bit.
When you've washed her bum you can try drying it with a hairdryer (on cool setting obviously) just to help make sure it's properly dry if you don't have time to leave her nappy-free.
If you haven't already put tea tree on - don't! It can really sting if the skin is broken (as can Sudocrem actually).

well saw the Doctor, and he has said that it does look like it is healing, said to try a different cream.
The cammoile tea seems to be helping and have been using just egg white and am changing v frequently, more than I would do and she has still been having some nappy free time, started using the cream from the chemist too.
Much better this morning, still red and dry and flaky but does seem better.
Will keep using the tea and cloth wipes.
Not looking forward to her going back to the childminder as I'm worried that 1 day with her will take us back to square one.
Have to go back on Friday just to make sure it is healing.
Thanks all and great article BB, would recomend it to all.

well would you believe it, I packed 4 nappies in the bag, spoke to my childninder, asked her to use all 4 nappies due to the rash etc and she only used 2.
What am I supposed to do?
I feel tied to her as both kinders go to her one day a week plus my dd really loves her and I know she loves her, but I feel really fed up about this.
What on earth am I supposed to do?

tell her straight. If she doesnt do what you want then you will have to look elsewhere. This is not good enough. 2 changes in a day is no where near enough for any child! its disgusting. You wouldnt sit in your own bodily functions so why would you allow your child to sit in it for that long?
friendlybaby

How long are your children with the childminder? When Edmund doesn't have a nappy rash I change him every 3 hours, but when he is teething he gets nappy rash and I change him every hour then. I think it is an absolute disgrace that she didn't do as requested. You are the Mum, and the employer!

2 changes in a day!!! Thats disgusting! She can't do that to your DD. You have to take her task over it. I change Liam every 3 hrs when he's clear and as soon as any signs of nappy rash or soreness start, then its more often.

I would definitely sit down with your childminder and ask her to make sure she uses all 4, and say GP has told you to do this. Great to hear the chamomile is working, that is always what has worked for my dd. Also, rather than sudocrem try kamillosan nappy cream as contains loads of chamomile too. x

only another 2 today, I'm exhausted by this.
It looks worse again, got the weekend to get it back to how it was then she is back to childminder on Monday, she is there from 9-5.
If on Monday after asking her to change more regulary then I will request a sit down chat about things with her.
If after that things still don't change, I really don't know what to do, start looking for a new childminder I guess.

Two changes all day, between 9 and 5?! I'm sorry B, but that really isn't on, even if in disposables - its no bloody wonder that the nappy rash isn't clearing. Whether she has others or not - she should be changing their bloody nappies.
Sorry if I sound harsh - but thats totally peed me off. If you only changed DD's nappy that many times in a day, I'm sure your HV would have a few harsh words to say to you about it, more than a few I should think.

I would suggest silver liners for your nappies going to the childminder - these are polyester liners with silver (yes, the metal!) threads running in. Silver is naturally antibacterial, and will help prevent bacterial growth if she's not changing them often enough

Thanks, just ordered some from you!
It is looking much better, we are only using water or cammoile tea/wipes, no liners and plenty of nappy off time.
BUT
she is back all day with the childminder, I have asked/told her to change her before and after her afternoon nap. So hope that works out ok.
Also stopped using the cream from the doctors as her skin was getting very dry.
Will see how it goes today.
