Hi

I'm a WAHM in Bedford and have a company called Healthy Choices. I am a mother of 4 boys and a qualified nurse with a lot of experience in health promotion and disease prevention. I'm using this experience to help other parents to make healthy choices for their children by providing up to date information on issues which affect all members of the family.

My greatest concern is the cocktail of toxic, and sometimes carcinogenic ingredients used in many toiletries sold in the supermarket. I have found a manufacturer who refuses to use ingredients that may compromise health, and my family have been using their products for over 4 years now with brilliant results. In 2002, after many friends and family wanted to use these products, too, I decided to set up my own business selling them.

Since then, my company has gradually grown by word of mouth and I now have a website which has been visited by people from all over the world. I send out a monthly e-newsletter which has a competition each month to win one of my products and that is proving to be really popular.

My web address is www.healthychoices.ukhq.co.uk/Familycare.

Looking forward to chatting to many of you on this great forum.

Best wishes

Sue

Hi all,

I'm Amy, and I run www.brighterblessings.co.uk I set up Brighter Blessings last November and it's going from strength to strength! It began as an extension from my hobby and beliefs, and I design and make herbal beeswax candles...from your standard natural straight candles, to my unqiue (and best-selling!) Triple Spiral Spell candles. All my candles are 100% natural, even down to the cotton braided wicks!

I also design and makes Spell Kits on request and bespoke candles, for whatever you could wish for!

My hubbie Paul and I both work from home, so we can (in theory!) spend more time with our boys. Paul my DH is an accountant and web-designer (they do say opposites attract!) which is very handy! LOL

Hope to chat soon,

Amy x

Hi Kim,

yes indeed, tolerance is a big keyword! LOL DH and I get along quite well now. Don't get me wrong, we have had, and DO have our ups and downs, but they are mainly due to needing more hours in the day! We are currently discussing getting a laptop, as we BOTH need the PC in the evenings, and it is very frustrating trying to juggle three businesses on it! Actually, now I have put that in writing, I haven't a clue how we do it!

Anyway, will do Kim, and it's really nice to be here!

Hello, I am Sharon, I run http://www.ButterflyBlends.co.uk, offering natural skincare for babies and the whole family, including pregnant mums-to-be.
My dh and I work together from home as well as look after our two children.
I produce all the products, fresh and from high quality ingredients, while my dh 'directs marketing' as he calls it (don't ask me what that is, he makes the labels and puts them on, not sure how that is directing marketing  ) but it keeps him busy and he feels important :::rotfl::

I am just redoing the website, trying for a total overhaul, didn't realise there would be som much work involved!

Hiya Vicki

I meant to ask you this a while back when it was on  what did you think of the supernanny's techniques on that channel 4 programme ?? I know you advice on dealing with difficult behaviour and wondered if you thought her methods were good as I thought she seemed to use some good ones at times

choice
28-08-2004, 06:00 PM
Oooooh you really want me to say?????

OK here goes and I'll duck quick! I thought the way she labelled children was appalling and it broke every rule in the book. She was saying "You are a naughty, naughty boy" etc - self fulfilling prophecy going on here! You should always label the behaviour not the child. First golden rule!

Then the way she put them on the stairs or in a room and told them to stay for however many minutes was just barking. They needed an egg timer so they had visual awareness of what she was talking about. From a child's perspective 2 minutes is meaningless.

I like the way she uses reward charts - I use them all the time and am due to launch my own next week - can't wait! I like the way she gets down to the kids level to talk to them. Her routines are good and I would advocate those too. I think the danger with this kind of programme is parents will copy the techniques yet really you need to work on your own for your child. No two children respond in the same way. I would also have liked to have seen a lot more positive handling of behaviour that I did on there. Children love positives!

Sorry that got long!

Not at all Vicki

It's really interesting to hear from someone in the know

I always try to pick up on when they do good things and praise that and I know what you mean about her keep telling a child they were naughty. I also love reward charts and am just starting one for our 2 little ones with potty training. OMG Potty training thats a whole other issue !!!!!!! and I feel as if we'll never crack it

Can't wait to see your new reward charts anyway so don't forget to pop back and tell us all about them

I wish it was a mad rush!! Despite advertising - I'm getting nowhere fast - BUT - I had a wholesaler contact ME yesterday and they were happy to set up an account (they supply Party Box!). So maybe onwards and upwards hopefully fron now on! You never know I might even be able to stretch to sponsoring the site soon!

I have more success selling individual items on ebay and ebid (seller name: jimblies on both). I don't know what I'm doing wrong - perhaps my prices are too cheap!! LOL!!

Hi Louise

Well to be honest I think a lot of people have found it quieter during the summer hols, I know I've certainly noticed a drop in sales but I'm sure things will pick up as we move into the silly season

Have you tried advertising locally and doing a mail drop. I get about 1,ooo leaflets done at a time and its 30.00, if you have a friendly newsagent you could ask to put them in the paper or even go for a nice long walk and do them yourself. Also have you tried swapping leaflets with other WAHMs. I now swap with 13 other WAHMs and we put each others leaflets in our parcels. It definately brings in business and several of my customers have commented on how they love getting leaflets for different businesses that they'd never normally see

Just say here if you'd like to swap and I'm sure some other mums will do it with you.

Also have you tried local nct groups, church noticeboards, toddler groups, shop windows etc etc . The advertising there is usually very cheap and in most cases free so always worth a go

Hope that helps a little
