Funny I was talking about this to DH yesterday. Here the council are going to start weighing or something the amount of rubbish you have and if its too heavy you get a fine! Now if I used cloth nappies it would cut down on the waste.
Now they havent bought this in yet and I think there will be big outcry when they do, so instead why dont they encourage people to recycle or the big one use cloth nappies to cut down on landfill waste.
Good for you and let us know what your reply is when you get it. I called as our council do a cloth nappy trial where they send you a selection of types to try and persuade you to use them, but, guess what its only for the deprived north of the borough me in normals ville cant try the trial!! Stupid I dont live in a posh area its just a normal eveyday area. OOOOOO they make me so mad, hope you have better luck.

i know, i put in my email. that ive been reading about bin wars, and i do recycle where possible, but if you look in my bin its half full with nappies!!. i can't afford to buy real ones outright and that it would be in their interest of offer an incentive
it is stupid, that they do it on areas....i might write a letter to the letters psge in the local paper depending on thier reply

Good for you Mrs:happy72: Is there a local MP who is into green issues who you could lobby to.
I watched some of the programme on chanel 4 last night about binwars/recycling stuff and thought of you when they mentioned your area. The local authourity have an officer whose job it is to educate people on recycling etc, could you contact him and get his support too?

some woman just called to say they don't have the funding to do that, and if they gave £50 to everyone who wanted real nappies whats to say thats what they would spend it on! and the same for vouchers..
shes going to get another woman who deals in real nappies to contact me
she also said they do loans, with low interest re-payments...
total waste of time
im in a mood now
oh, but they do offer an incentive in North Devon apparentely! grrr rah rah

How frustrating. I can imagine that will be the answer from a lot of local authorities 20061008 Its so annoying though when you know about all the cr$£ that they do spend money on though.
I think you should start a crusade for real nappies - you could go down in history as the woman who single handedly persuaded local authourities to change their attitude or you could start a protest group, M.F.C.B {mums for cloth bums}. Seriously though you could lobby the local councillors/MPS etc and if you did I am sure you would get a lot of support from other like minded mums.
We are proud of you for trying though :kisshands:

i'll think about it, though mine will prob all be out of nappies by the time anything happens!

grrr to them
My cousins council gave her £50 per child, she basically had to send her receipts to prove that she brought nappies, it's is actually quite easy to do, there are many other councils that do it so it can hardly be rocket science can it
You always contact the WEN and speak to them for advice etc

I just followed links through from the WEN site and came up to the Devon Real Nappy Project and it mentioned that people in certain Sure Start areas of Devon qualify for £250 grants. No good unless you are in a Sure start area though. Sorry you didn't get any where :kisshands:

yeah, the one that says its based in Exeter, but only gives grants to those in Barnstaple and other areas apart from Exeter

its the same here... if i lived about 10 mins (by car) in most other directions i would have got and incentive, or a nappy cleaning adn delievery service thing .. but no, not here....
tbh i just used my child benefit as we were doing it for anti eczema reasons too - although we couldnt get them via nhs either!!!!! (trust me i tried!!LOL)
If you do decide to take them on hun let me know and i will tackle my council too!!!

Well she's just showing her ignorance then as you have to submit your receipts when you apply for the funding to prove that you've spent the money on nappies - silly woman!
Good on you for trying though hun.

It is just another example of post code lottery...just like that that applies for the NHS. It makes my blood boil.

I've had a thought hun - what if you emailed Ben Bradshaw. Not only is he the councillor in Exeter for Labour, but he is also Minister of State ( Local Environment, Marine and Animal Welfare) who should be focussing some of his efforts on this type of thing.
Part of his remit is:
# Local environmental quality
# Air quality and noise
# Waste
# Lead role on planning, regional and local government issues
which to me says that he should be actively trying to promote real nappy usage which will then have a positive effect on the environment.
Devon County are useless - they aren't worth bothering with unfortunately.
I may try and lobby Mid Devon myself, see if they are offering any incentives anywhere, but deffo give Ben B a go

Sorry you got not joy with it, but it really is a postcode lottery and so wrong. I think I'm going to see out local mp, she does a workshop for locals gripes and worries once a week at the police station of all places, see what she has to say about it because if the north borough are getting something I want it too!!
Good luck to all those who takle the councils about this, they cant moan about rubbish if they are not at least making an effort to help people change.

OK. I've got off my soapbox and decided to do something about this. I'm setting up a petition to stop this postcode lottery. I'll be back with more details once the petition is ready to be signed up to.

I found the same thing with my council (Hull), although 2 other cities I've lived in and one up the road all offer some incentives - it's ridiculous. My OH is really into recycling etc and I have been looking into real nappies - so far have 4 different types to try - from ebay and the usednappy website. So I've not spent too much and if we like them will get more from same places. Also our local stuff4sale website has a birth to potty set of motherease for only £65 - keep looking around Wassat - all the one's we've got so far have been lovely condition (even my mum approves)

When I asked about nappy incentives my council told me if I choose to have children then why should everyone else have to pay for them! They don't even offer free advice or promotion - seem to think it's a fad that us inconvenient greenies will grow out of.... I've written stroppy letters to councillors and the complaints dept of the civic centre - tho no replies yet.....

OK. I've just had the response back from Downing Street and the petition is now live. I haven't had chance to do anything else with it yet, so as yet there are no other signatures on it!
Please sign the petition to get this sorted

Yes, we do in South Gloucestershire too. It is the same as in Bristol. But it annoys me that yet again we don't all get treated the same. It is the same as in maternity care (but don't get me started on that one!)
