According to The Times - http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/comment/columnists/alice_miles//article1733682.ece?Submitted=true,
'If a woman has time to discuss her nursery or the relative merits of the different sippy cups, then she has time to post a comment on the failings of the school system or whether we should pull out of Iraq.'

It also states Then there is the view that women “don’t have opinions”. That isn’t true either. All the women I know, from newspaper executive to nurse to nursery assistant, have plenty of opinions. Nor are they uninterested in politics: women are always the first to volunteer for playgroup committees or school governing boards – raw politics – when men claim that they haven’t got the time.

So, do we need to be having more political discussion on here?

the problem is that people are friends on here and when anything stirring strong emotions pop up the anon posts come out. Dont entirely understand why but maybe its because people dont want to be judged or fear of upsetting people.

I think it would be nice, but I also think that MZ has a pretty good mix of topical events.

I love a good moan about politics and I think women more than men actually do discuss it more. All my hubby moans about really to do with it, is the price of beer and car tax going up...lol

If I wanted to talk politics then I wouldn't be on MZ. I come here for gossip, friendly banter, proud Mummy moments etc.

That's OK when you have kids to talk about, not every woman have kids. I too love a gossip on here, but sometimes like to put the world to rights and have a serious conversation (very occasionally I may add..lol).

I glad it's not all just trival chat all the time that's why its a good site because there are sometimes discussions on more serious topics and usually people are tolerant of each others opinion.

I think we have plenty or rants on here about the failing of systems and in having an open site it makes people feel they can come in with any subjects that are troubling are never stop minds.

sometimes it would be good to have a debate over politics etc, I think we do ok here but it does all too often end with someone falling out.

Maybe a debate in chat done the Oxford way?

Or how about a debate with all postings anon so peeps can't feel a personal slight?

But I think we do ok here, it would be nice to see more men though! :cheesy:

I like general chat, I don't want to get into political debates with people who I class as my friends - I don't discuss politics with my RL friends, and love being able to come here and chat about anything and everything. We get our teeth into certain debates, some revolve around how we bring our children up, some about the foods we eat, and others about the schooling system etc - if I wanted a huge political debate with someone, then I wouldn't have joined MZ for the friendly chat, banter and support when needed.

My God - I don't talk about politics with my friends at all and I'm not about to start on here, particularly as the political issues affecting here are very different to those in England, Wales and Scotland, and vice versa - every area has different issues. Thats without even considering our international members, how many of us follow international politics?
I think Alice Miles needs to wise up.

But this is Mumzone.

I know! But there isn't anywhere else I can find where I can chat and read girly stuff? All there is, is women in business sites or silly chat ones, just because I don't have kids, doesn't mean I don't like talking to Mums.

Politics is everywhere, every time you moan about lack of dentists or schools cocking up, that is talking politics?

Jayne

PS. There are blokes on Mumszone too! :D

I don't mind talking politics and I think the key is to respect everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Blokes on Mumszone..when did they sneak on!!!!!
