Just wondered if anyone who has an ebay shop can advise how to get really good clear photos, is there a special light you buy or background thingy?

It is really hard to get good clear photos and I think a good picture really does help.

We try and take them in the day, but even then it is hit and miss

The camera you use makes a huge difference. I struggled for a couple of years with my old crappy camera. But DH bought me a better one for my birthday and it's fab! I always take them on my kitchen floor as it's the lightest place in the house and the tiles are light which really helps. You could also take them outside if you have something to put the items on.
My advice is to get the best possible natural light and take them there. I also have photo editing software so if it's a bit dark I can lighten it up.
