Children's TV favourite Balamory is to come to an end after producers decided "to explore other programme ideas".

The BBC show, aimed at pre-school children, introduced youngsters to characters Miss Hoolie and PC Plum.

Filmed in Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, Scotland, the show launched in 2002 and picked up a Bafta last year.

Producers said there were still more than 50 new episodes to be screened so viewers could continue to enjoy it for some time yet.

"We've enough to keep the schedule fresh for a long time," said creative director Simon Parsons.

There are also three DVDs in the pipeline, including a Christmas special, about the fictional fishing village.

Balamory is shown daily on BBC Two and the CBeebies digital channel.

The series has spawned a clutch of merchandising including books, toys and music CDs, featuring characters such as Josie Jump, Spencer and Archie.

There is also a touring stage show featuring the cast members singing, dancing and telling stories.

Heard this news on Radio 2 this morning .... Terry Wogan announced it and then some mother phoned/emailed (whatever) wasn't really listening to the details ... to say her young daughter had heard it and was now devastated!

So he had to apologise to her and say that there were lots of new episodes still to be shown!

Did anyone see the episode recently where PC Plum and a couple of others were going to be on a quiz show? They had to mime out jobs, but the director/producer of the show was ........ Terry Wogan!!!

Personally, I don't mind it .... wonder how they will finish the series? Will PC Plum marry Miss Hoolie?

Or is he more likely to run off with Archie or Spencer? :P

Why do they have that annoying will they/won't they about Plum and Big Ears (have you noticed them, underneath that stupid hair they're HUGE!!) It's so obvious that she'll have more fun with Spencer (wink wink!) And Plum and Archie will live happily ever after in the big pink palace (a gay reference if ever I saw one!)

Christine loves Balamory but I think I'll be glad to see the back of it!

Was there a different Josie? I remember watching it one day and thinking she'd changed but there was never any repeats of the old Josie so thought I was imagining it.

That Penny Pocket has such a thing for Plummy!!!!! Is she blind? Deaf? Stupid? All Plummy needs is a great big rainbow banner to fly out the station window!! Wouldn't that be an episode worth watching! Maybe Polly will be left on the shelf after Edie and Suzie run off together to an even more remote scottish island in her yellow bus.
