Hello!

I am looking to start my own website and just wondered how and where you guys advertise. If you pay for adverts or rely on word of mouth or free advertising etc.

Hope you don't mind me asking!

I rarely pay for adverts but tbh i dont think that really works so well with my type of business. Often people who are looking for a website prefer to go with a recommended company rather than one they see advertised.

I write articles - mostly for my website but I have found them published elsewhere on other sites too, occasionally for other websites to use too.

In the early days of getting my biz running I had Antonia at ACPR do me a couple of press releases to get word out about my services.

I generally believe that the above will give more gain than a simple paid for advert. Which needs to be repeated in order to achieve sales.

I think it depends on what type of business you have. I know a lot of WAHP's add their signatures in forums where its allowed and they find if they are active its a great way of getting their site known.

Others do like to advertise by way of a banner and again its a great way of getting your site seen not only be members on a site but also by any visitors. Again I do think the type of business you have makes a difference on how many click throughs you get. I know some get an awful lot of clicks this way while others dont get so many.

Press releases can get the site known but only if people are interested in reading them and again the same with articles.

Another way of getting your site known is reciprocal link exchanges.

Word of mouth mainly but one paid for banner ... also do a great deal of promotional work to help spread the word ~ the newsletter is great for keeping in touch with people as are the competitions & other forum memberships !
As Ravenfire said reciprocal linking & Link Directories are the route to SEO results !!

Good luck with the site :happy72:

I have only paid for a banner on one site, it hasn't been worth my while. I do get alot of hits from competitions that I run. I have been in a few peoples newsletters but only had a few hits from those (better than nothing though!).

I keep considering paying for more advertising but am reluctant as everyone seems to say what a waste it is.

I had some business cards printed, these go inside all my orders in the hope that they may be passed on to someone else. A few friends have displayed these at various places and I have left some in a children's play centre etc. I keep menaing to get organised and send a letter to my local library and some preschools etc.
