I started watching it but had to turn over, cant believe some parents. I watched Extras instead!
I feel so sorry for the two year old at dinner table - all he was doing was looking round to see what his mum or dad were up to in the kitchen - not fair at all for the toddler!!! Not sure I can watch all of it - its so distressing

watching it, the woman with the fish slice is making me laugh, but the little boy mitchell is tragic, I'm sorry but the guy is too harsh, poor kid doesn't know what he has done wrong, he seems ok to me.

I know his little face made me well up. What a prat his father is and I am ashamed of his mother not standing up for him. She doesn't agree with it at all you can see that in her face. He is an out and out bully and I would love to meet him and tell him what I think - idiot.

I watched a clip of this on GMTV this morning and decided that I would give it a miss, the comments on there were enough to make me see mad.

I watched this too and was so annoyed the parents were'nt smacking for discipline reasons but cause they could'nt control themselfs and the poor 3 year old little boy what a shame wanted to shout at the parents and tell them that its the parents who need teaching not the kids

Totally agree his father had a major problem poor little lad. Why oh why did they have to find the oddest families they could for this programme. Why didn't they not find some normal families that smacked as a last resort instead of for no reasons at all.

Because that wouldn't make "good" viewing, I guess.
Didn't actually see the programme - but sounds pretty much like I would have expected it to be.

the woman with the flish slice was almost comical, her children also started running away from her and even hitting her back. I was however inspired and have decided to use the fish slice on Dh when he misbehaves ! What do you think?

fish slice woman was comedy genious, I loved the way hers kids laughed when she did it, that woman needed serious help. Mitchell's dad need help as well, poor little kid. But no-one has mentioned the Christian family, to me they the only ones in my opinion that were almost "normal"

I agree ruthie, I started watching thinking it would show parents who smack as a last resort and those who were just over the top smacking for nothing. I was really annoyed that they decided to just show the over the top parents. I could not watch it as I was annoyed at the parents but also at the programme makers for not making it a fair balanced programme.

i have an issue with smacking anyway. I dont smack mine (i have a couple of times for really dangerous things like running in the road iykwim) but i dont do it, it made me feel sick to my stomach when i have done it. I knew that this programme would make my blood boil and so i didnt watch it.. reading this thread makes me glad i didnt. I dont believe in smacking... i saw a woman once in tesco pull down this little boys pants and trousers and wallop him so hard... all he had done was try to help by getting something she said she wanted but he had dropped it on the floor and the glass bottle smashed... I felt so angry and so nearly said something. In fact as i went past them i did make a comment about huniliation and other ways of discipline and gave him one of those its ok smiles......
oh I missed this ... should have come on here last night then I would have seen the reminder!

I agree, as someone said on another forum a quick smack is far less painful than getting hit by a car. I smack occasionally, I don't like doing it but it works imo. Never did me any harm and I have great kids who love and respect me and I love and respect them.

I have smacked mine in extreme circumstances, but I agree - the father of Mitchell had issues which needed sorting. The woman with the fish slice - well!!!!!!!!!!! And what about those eyebrows???

There is a difference though if a smack is given as a last resort and other means of control, explaining, reasoning, asking have been exhausted, then a quick short smack to the bottom or back of the legs never the head or face will usually restore order. I with three children did smack but very rarely, all I had to do was ask would you like a smack and they would behave, it just meant they knew they were pushing the situation too far. I think there is a vast difference between a parent who will not come down to a childs level and see how things look from their point of view before reacting. A good parent talks to their child and nurtures good behaviour and never smacks for the sake of it or for petty things and would never humiliate a child in front of others.

little ds has only had a couple of smacks for dangerous things like putting keys in elecric sockets and running out the gate when the chain was off into the road, dd in the middle never had a smack and is a right little **** just lately, and big ds had smacks when he was younger, god i am a bad mother he mainly got them when he wouldnt do as he was told and i was stressed, but he still loves me 16yrs on and tells me i should have smacked dd as she shows no respect just lately, but with dd and little ds i tried different approach, dont no if its worked will find out when they are 16probably, just remembering my mum smacking me daily with a slipper or anything else she could find, and i still ring her daily
