I was so glad that she won - I have wanted her to from the beginning. I think she was by far the best.

Zoe the vocal coach picked Helena but only cos she's progressed so well vocally, everyone one else picked Connie.

I thought she picked her because it would have looked bad if she had won and everyone had picked Connie!

Probably
Just read in papers today that ALW has already found a leading lady (Emma Williams) for the performance of Maria and that the winner Connie will share the role. Reason given for sharing is quoted" for an untrained or inexperienced singer to take over on over 3 or 4 shows a week would be beyond their ability and Maria is a demanding role"
Why have the tv show in first place???????

He said its perfectly normal to do this with a show to protect the performers voice - basically so she doesnt end up with the problems Julie Andrews had for example, and that he did the same with others in musicals including Sarah Brightman.

I know they always have an understudy. No one can possibly take on a leading role for 7 performances a week 52 weeks of the year without holidays and time out. It's very true that the voice has to be really well cared for and looked after. The reason for the tv show was to ensure healthy sales of theatre tickets I expect and it also made lovely viewing.

I thought understudies only went on if the star was ill, I wonder how they will arrange it so that you can sbook to see which one of them you want playing the role?

I'm not sure you can always, there is some sort of system. They will have dates when they know (apart from illness) who will be performing. Understudies do usually only go on when the main performer can't perform but there is usually more than one person for the leading role. I know that Elaine Paige became famous because she understudied for someone in Cats (think it was Cats) and she blew the audience away!
