JOIN CELEBRITY GRANDPARENTS MEL BROOKS, JOAN RIVERS AND JANE FEARNLEY-WHITTINGSTALL TO CELEBRATE THE 21st CENTURY GRANDPARENT
BBC favourite hit children’s show Jakers! brings to life the spirit of Grandparent’s Day on 23 September 2006
With over 16.5 million grandparents in the UK it’s time to kick off the slippers and celebrate Grandparent’s Day on Saturday 23 September 2006 and make it a memorable day for families all over the country. Mums have had their treats on Mother’s Day now it’s granny’s turn! Britain’s favourite granny Jane Fearnley-Whittingstall (Author of The Good Granny Guide and mother of TV chef Hugh) has joined forces with BAFTA award winning CBBC show Jakers! and its celebrity grandparents Mel Brooks and Joan Rivers to celebrate the new generation of grandparents and wish them all a happy Grandparent’s Day! Send your Grandparent’s Day card by email or post by visiting the Jakers! website at www.jakers.co.uk where a variety of themed cards will be available from early September and then take a leaf out of Grandpa Piggley’s storybook and have some fun!
Grandparent’s Day was borne out of the desire to encourage communication with grandparents, and to honour generations past, highlighting the important role they can play and the joy the generations can share together. Celebrating Grandparent’s Day provides families with a unique link to their history through these valued members of society.
Author of The Good Granny Guide or How To be A Modern Grandmother (Short Books, £12.99), Jane Fearnley-Whittingstall represents the new generation of grandparents. Her best-selling book offers helpful hints about the practical side of grandparenting and is full of family wisdom and good humour but above all it celebrates the joy of being a grandparent. Jane is also editor of www.goodgranny.com - a website designed to inform and entertain grandparents and put them in touch with each other.
With her mixture of traditional values and modern savvy, Jane is the very picture of a 21st-century granny. She comments; “I love being a grandparent - spending time with my grandchildren gives me immense pleasure. I feel grandparents today have a different approach to those of previous generations. Although many of us are still working, we are more ‘hands on’ than our parents were. Most grandparents nowadays have a very modern outlook, and think nothing of going online to communicate with their grandchildren and with other grandparents. We feel we are members of a big, friendly club, and Grandparent’s Day helps us share in celebrating all the fun we have with our grandchildren.â€
Karen McNally, Vice President Licensing, Entara, says, “One of the core themes of Jakers! is that it celebrates grandparents and the relationship with their grandchildren. We want to highlight Grandparent’s Day because it reflects the nature of Jakers! and shows the joy that intergenerational bonding can bring to families, and the important role that grandparents play in a child’s lifeâ€.
Going back to traditional roots, Jakers! celebrates the gift of storytelling and the joy of childhood adventures. Whilst Piggley and the gang keep younger viewers entertained, Wiley the Sheep, an American import voiced by Mel Brooks, brings his own unique style and humour which is a firm favourite with parents, making Jakers! true family viewing. In each episode, Grandpa Piggley regales his contemporary, city-dwelling grandpigs with stories from his childhood spent on Raloo Farm in 1950s Ireland. He strengthens the bond between the generations and gently imparts important life lessons along the way. Jakers! returns to BBC2 on Sundays from 8am from 3 September 2006.
And there is also a selection of other fun Jakers! treats for grandparents to enjoy with the kids including a brand new range of Jakers! books available to buy now in stores nationwide. Plus watch out for a brand new Jakers! adventure on DVD called ‘Spooky Storytellers’ out in October featuring four exciting stories that will keep the kids thoroughly entertained. So this year remember to make a special effort to spend time with your grandparents and have some fun!
