After another trip to the dump my dad came home with lawn mower... only thing wrong with it was the grass collector was cracked!! The time before he came back with a Dyson that looked newer than my one... all it needed was the filter cleaned now it works perfectly!

How can people throw away things like that ... they aren't exactly cheap to buy? it really annoys me!

I'd so much prefer to give the item away before taking something to the dump where it would just go off to landfill!

I know, it's stupid.

Our dump has a strick, no rumaging policy, so even if I do spot something that looks good, it goes to waste coz I can't salvage it.

You'd be amazed home many people throw away good stuff that could be recycled or passed on to a charity shop. The only good thing is that if it's taken to the tip then it will be sold on if it's any good, but if it's just stuck in the dustbin it's landfilled. I get really cross about it and one of the things that is really bothering me at the moment is disposable nappies, there are millions of them dumped in landfill every day and they will take hundreds of years to biodegrade. I think a lot more should be done to promote cloth nappies and eco-friendly disposables. We were on holiday last week and as I didn't want to take my cloth nappies (although I did miss them) I bought a pack of eco-friendly disposables but still felt really guitly about using them!

one word to answer that one:

FREECYCLE

I don't think we are supposed to take things from the dump so we always make sure the men aren't looking hehe

I'd not heard about freecycle till the other day .... it looks like such a great idea... well done to the person who thought of it :)

ive been going clear out crazy now that we have moved. BUT.....there is a charity shop next door, so they must be loving it!!!! it is terrible the amount of stuff that we chuck. went to the tip to get rid of all our carboard boxes and it was a nightmare. so many kids bikes that were fine, just a little rusty. problem is that a lot of charity shops dont take em now because of risk of being sued if an accident happens!!!!

our dump sells good enough stuff at cheap giveaway prices...the last thing my mate bought was a scooter for her ds and a fish tank ornament (bridge thing) for about £2
oh and also she got some kids jewellery still boxed included in that, which she used in her party bags

I often see things at the dump but there are too many men around to sneek the item away. Maybe I should chat to the guys who work there in order to get a few freebies - only joking. Does anyone else know if they sell them on?
Some dumps I have visited even take the good stuff out of the bins and have it on display but I have never been brave enough to ask about it.

I wonder why some tips don't let you take stuff.... just seems a bit daft really when someone can put something to use!

I freecycle or charity shop as much as poss. Freecycle still finding its feet up here where I am so having more luck giving away than getting things I've posted for, thought I'd have a million responses when i was asking for kids clothes as I know i have heaps kicking about, was sure I'd get some but nothing!!!!!! Did get a flymo and a dish washer though, as well as rid of all the baby stuff lingering in the cupboards. Did send a heap of stuff to the sump the other day, but they sell it on anyway so don't feel so bad.
Planning on getting a composter though, as feel lousy about chucking stuff in bin that could be composted!

our local council give composters away free every so often, or if you present your council tax bill you can get them at a reduced rate at all other times

Just rung ours, they give them away now and then, Not just now though unfortunately. But they sell them at £10 instead of £50 have just rung them to sort it out.

My stuff goes to the dump but then there is usually a problem with it before I get rid of it anyway.

Did you know that if you take stuff to the charity shop, even if the clothes are dirty or it's just pieces of old fabric, they don't throw anything away, everything is recycled, well almost everything there are a couple of exceptions but I can't remember what they were. They actually sell the stuff to the recycling plant so it's even more money raised :happy72:
