Hi everybody now U may think this is a stupid question,
When my dd2 was little she asked this and nobody seemed to know the answer, why does a salt pot have only one hole when the pepper one has several,
Stupid I know but does anyone know the answer.

dh seems to think it is to do with quantity, that you only need a little salt to flavour food but you need a lot of pepper to flavour it.
or his other explanation
so you know which is the salt pot and the pepper pot by how many holes are in the top

I'm not sure either Kerri's explainations seem good. We only ever use pepper. I don't put salt on anything, the only time we have salt is if we have chips from the chip shop and that's very rare.
Salt is so bad for you and do you know..... it does nothing to enhance the flavour of your food, it just makes you produce more saliva so you 'think' you are enjoying it more!
On that note, I'm off to bed, night ;)

Yes thats what most people I have spoken to have said lol
And I don't add salt either because of high blood pressure in the family
My dh has loads of salt, just like his mum, but I rarely use it apart from on chips. If you cook flavoursome food it doesn't need to be ruined by salt. In fact I made lasagne at mil's once and before she even sat down she asked if it needed salt. (Why not taste the damn stuff? Grrr. My cooking needing salt - I was offended,)

I think the salt pot only has one hole to reduce the amount of salt you put on your food as it doesn't come out as fast

You need to stop them having salt, my Nan was like that and died of a massive stroke. There were posters up on the stroke ward that she was on and the two biggest causes of strokes are smoking and access salt in the diet. We've not used salt since and she died in 1991.

I have to admit - I love salt on my food, I'm really bad. So is my nan (snowfairy's post worried me about my nan though) I don't add it Zack's food but always add it afterwards to my own plate. Perhaps it's because I grew up with my nan who always salted food?Don't know.
I don't know the answer to the pots question either lol

My mums friend has a great saying about salt: 'Good food doesn't need it and bad food doesn't deserve it'!!!!

I grew up with salted food too but giving it up was really easy. It's like giving up sugar in my tea, if someone makes me a cup of tea with sugar in now it makes me gag.
Just stop having it Jess, it is really bad for you and you don't need it!

Accordint to DP this is the reason........
its to do with the size of the granules..
If you turn a salt thing upside down the size of the granule to its weight ratio means that the salt will pour easily out of one small hole. Whereas pepper being far finer and lighter when held upside down if it was in a salt mill then you would be there foreer trying to get it to come out of one hole as it is so powdery that it sticks together. It is far easier to get it out of lots of holes!!
So speaks the oracle on useless information!!

I don't add any salt to my food, people I work with think I'm crazy and wonder why I don't add it when I cook potatoes and veggies, I find it ruins the flavours of the food, whereas with pepper I love the stuff

I thought it had something to do with the fact that in years gone by salt was very expensive, and you were paid in salt, hence the saying, 'worth your salt'.
That would explain the use of one hole so that you don't use as much salt being a more expensive comodity, there wouldn't have been any health reasons for it when cruet sets were first used.

Id say its something to do with the texture, salt flows fast so doesnt need more than one hole and pepper needs a shake as its light - probably a stupid answer but thats me lol!

I think this is the right answer!
Jess you CAN give up sugar in your tea, you just do it gradually, put a bit less in every couple of days. That's how I did it, now I can taste the lovely flavour of the tea itself rather than the sickly taste of sugar.
Here's another for you ........ I only drink tea with skimmed milk! I thought I could never drink skimmed milk but I can't drink tea any other way now. Can only drink coffee with semi though, although I rarely drink coffee.

i agree i dont even own a salt pot if i have a visitor they have to go without salt my parents dont have salt either, you have to think too that everything you eat has salt in it already so why add more even bread has it in and bottled water etc and when you dont have salt you can taste it a lot more in other things but if your ankles or wrists are swollen and it's not due to pregnancy or illness try reducing your salt intake

I found this:
The FAQ from the The International Guild of Professional Butlers has the most complete answer, "The salt shaker may be distinguished primarily by the size of the holes, and then by the number of holes. Salt is coarser than pepper, and needs the larger hole. It is also heavier and flows much more freely than pepper, accordingly there are often fewer holes on the salt shaker to help control the flow. However, there is no manufacturing standard."

I love salt on my chips and on my roast potatoes but dont salt anything else. And as for sugar - Ive tried sweetners and it doesnt taste the same. I dont think a little of what you like hurts as long as its done in moderation but then I think thats true of a lot of things..lol!!!
Sarah
10-07-2006, 04:40 PM
Sweeters are vile and I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. The key to giving up sugar is to do it very gradually. Just put a few less grains in each time. That's how I did it and in the end I didn't notice the difference when I stopped putting it in altogether.
But I do agree with everything in moderation (except salt and sweetners) :cheesy:

I have another version
according to my grandmother you should put the salt in a small pile on the corner of your plate and touch the food to the salt but the pepper can be sprinkled over the lot.
now all i need to do is find a plate with corners.....

I thought that Toni, didn't think I'd ever do it. Now I think sugar in my tea is vile and it makes me heave. The tea tastes sooo much better now. The reason most of us have sugar in our drinks in the first place is because our parents put it in when we were little!

I actually went through a stage when I was in my teens of not having sugar - because I thought I needed to lose weight (wish I was that size now!) and eventually went back to sugar because it tasted so much nicer. I just have a very sweet tooth!

Well to be honest I have salt on everything, vegetables, potato's, crisps, chips, meat, fish, in homemade bread, in casseroles, cut knees, gargles for ulcers and sore throats you name it I put salt on it. I don't put it in vegetables when cooking though so the kids don't have it.
Don't do sugar though as I just don't like sweet drinks. I only buy if for making bread and baking. None of us have it on cereal or in drinks.

Im afraid noone will convert me I definitely cant have chips without salt and vinegar and I love sugar in my tea, although just have the one. Life would be very boring if we deprived ourselves of the nice things - cream cakes, crisps for example, look at the salt and sugar in them and I love them!
Katiequiggle
10-07-2006, 05:29 PM
You wont convert me, I am my own person.
I don't put salt in the cooking apart from the bread, so no one else has to eat it. I don't eat pre-packaged or convienience foods at home, I don't smoke, I only drink occasionally, I don't use sugar in drinks or cereals, I follow the GI diet as reccomended by the Nutritionalist at the hospital, and if putting salt on my food because I enjoy it is the only thing I do wrong I don't think that's bad.
Sarah

"Soapbox" Speaking as a nutritionist, my opinion is everything in moderation with only a few exceptions. Your body needs salt, but only a little. Food shouldn't be cooked in it unless absolutely necessary! A little as flavouring ever so often should not do any harm unless you have high blood pressure or any other disease to which it might cause a problem. I also think that drinking tea and coffee with sugar is fine, as long as you are not also eating sweet things all day long. Sweeteners are not really that good for you. I would rather have sugar than sweetener. This includes diet drinks, although fizzy drinks no matter what form they take have to be one of the worst things for you ever. For anyone trying to diet, stopping fizzy drinks altogether might be of benefit!!
Sorry for the little lecture there. Its all my opinion, but I have studied nutrition and work as a nutritionist, and see myself as being a healthy person!

im sorry but i love salt. i never cook food with salt in it but always put it on my food when its cooked and cant eat most food without it. i never give the kids food with salt on though david even gets carrot sticks in mcdonalds instead of chips because they cover them with salt. and i dont drink hot drinks very much at all but if i do have a cup of tea i need 2 sugars cant drink it with out it. my mam makes david tea every now and again but he doesnt have sugar. my friends nanna used to have 7 sugars in her tea and she used to drink it all day :smiley-fa

Well, first off all it`s opposite in Denmark, the salt pot has many holes (if it`s not a little bowl of salt) and the pepper one only has one hole. Seccondly in Denmark we use salt on and in EVERYTHING food, bakery, icecream and even candy.

Have to say we don't have salt in our house - I know we need a certain amount of it in our daily diets but as far as I'm aware we already get that from bread and other tinned/canned/processed foods. i went off salty things when I was pregnant the first time - could even taste the salt in a digestive biscuit! I never use it in cooking or on the table
