I am really excited - my most recent brainwave is to grow my own vegetables! Would love to know:
1. who else does it?
2. do you use pots or plant into soil in your garden
3. Is it difficult??
I don't want to go anywhere near our soil personally there are millions of spiders and weird things eww! So ideally I'd love to grow them in pots (which my nan says will be ok)

I have grown green beans in pots, tomatoes in grow bags and beans. I am sure you could grow lettuces and stuff in pots too. Go for it Jess, there is nothing in the world like homegrown veggies !

No, you don't need a greenhouse for quite alot of veggies, just get some seeds EA and try a pot or two, you'll be amazed what happens !!

we only have a tiny garden, but we now have 3 tom plants in pots (one each for the kids) We do grow peppers and chillies on the kitchen window sills which work really well - no, we dont buy seeds just use the seeds straight from the pepper. they are lovely and far sweeter and more exciting then buying them!! The kids love watching them appear and then grow and then change colour!!

All we use to grow them is a seed tray with compost, plant the seeds and then water... you will need to give them a stake to grow up though.. tie with wool, not string as this cuts into the stems..

I don't grow my own veg but my dad has an allotment so we pinch all the veg from him.
Not very green fingered here, dd brought a sunflower seed home from school to grow and it never did. Every time someone gives me a plant it always dies. Good job Im better at looking after kids than plants lol

I was like that, but apparently you can develop green fingers!! It all started with my spider plant! IT left home with me nearly 11 years ago and has been fed on dregs from coke/beer cans and who knows what else.. it has been watered daily, then nothing for a few months... cant kill the damn thing and trust me ive tried!!!

my mumwants to do this but she's scared that bugs will go on the food and then she wont be able to eat it (she's very fussy) so she wan'ts to get one of those little greenhouses not one of those ones with a door but the top opens up the best way i can describe it as a sideboard or window ledge one

Homegrown veg is far more tasty than supermarket. My dad grows all his veg without pesticides, only uses organic products and the veg tastes wonderful.

Your veggie patch looks great! My garden is teeny and has nests of weird things so I'd definitely use pots - might limit what I can grow though. My windowsills are really skinny so maybe I could lay the tray of pepper seeds on the floor near my patio doors instead?
Ooh and Loopychick - I know what your mum means I am fussy like that too! Lol and it is annoying. I might have to get over it though hehe

Hi Jess
I grow lots of my veg in pots and I always start some of it off in front of the patio doors. Salad bowl lettuce is fine in a little tub as you can start picking it off quite quickly and it will keep growing back. I always grow the little round carrots in tubs too - if you keep them indoors until they're established (and don't thin the seedlings outside) there's no carrot fly risk and you don't need a very deep tub either. They are delicious too!
Good luck

speaking of veggies, we cut the other cauliflower last night and it is massive bigger than thomas's head, funny thing is if it had been a month later the man next door who is in charge of the horticultural show said it would have won,

not a very good picture though

I am growing tomatoes, cucumber, pepper (but never get anywhere with it!), raspberries (growing really well now - had them a few years!), lettuce (cutting daily) and green beans. My garden is about the size of a postage stamp - tomatoes are in buckets along with some beans. Cucumber, lettuce and peppers are in grow bags and raspberries and the rest of the beans are in the postage stamp!

Anyone here growing potatoes? DS and DD planted one each and they are growing great, I have a vague memory that you should remove the flowers to make them grow better, is this true or did I dream it?

We're growing potatoes and do every year as they don't need much looking after. Never heard that you need to remove the flowers though ...... all I know is that we start digging them up once all the green stuff on top starts dieing back.
We're also growing round carrots (in pots), sweetcorn, aubergines (growbag), peppers (growbag), courgettes (ground and growbag), peas, lettuce, apples, plums and gage. We also have loads of cherry tomato plants - we grow the tumbling variety in hanging baskets which is great if you haven't much space plus they can't be eaten by slugs etc. We mix them in with flowers so they look nice too!

It's not too late for lettuce and carrots from seed. You may still be`able to pick up some tomato or courgette plants from a garden centre.

we usually wait for the flowers to die off before we cultivate them

I had every good intention of growing my own this year, but unfortunatley it never happened.
I am absolutely useless with anything to do with gardening but i wanted to give it a try, i did put some strawberry plants in.....but then i forgot about them and they died lol
y 3 year old is always asking to grow things, to be honest tho i am never sure what can be put into pots or grow bags etc.....our garden is so tiny you can only just turn round in it lol.....its all slabbed too so no grass.
Does anyone have any reccomendations for a simple, idiot term, book that i can get ready to start next year? My son would absolutely love it. It would need to be things he could do too though.
Many thanks everyone!
How is everyones veggies and fruit coming along this year???

Lol Smirnoff!
I never got round to doing anything this year... got all excited about it but then it just never happened. I need to read up about it first really, like when to actually start planting etc... my nan says you can grow potatoes in black bags and add another layer of soil as the shoots poke out of the first bit.
Linzi - our garden is tiny aswell, and although we have grass (well a poor excuse for some grass anyway!) we have bug infestations and I hate the garden so I will be growing in pots!
