Oh crumbs not my night I've just written this twice cause I lost the first one lol.
Right Scrapbooking.
All materials need to be acid and lignin free because it's the acids that attack the photo's and they start to decay. The gasses given off in pvc albums (like the sticky page type ones from the 80's) affect photos too by turning them yellow. (this can sometimes be corrected if you scan them into your computer and use adobe photoshop auto colour).
Having said all that, I am not anal about it and I do use items that are not acid free I just don't let them come into contact with my photo's.
Pritt stick is fine as are most glue sticks (I use the Asda's own or the Wilkinsons as they are cheaper) Double sided tape is brilliant as are tape dispensers by Herma ect.
Journalling is probably one of the most important things to do in a scrapbook. Everyone of us probably has a box of photo's passed down from a grandmother which photo's of people we have no idea about. You must write on your layouts who, why, when, where and what so that future generations will know who the funny little boy wearing the dinasaur hat is, and that the photo of the lady with the pink shoes, Auntie Anne, you know Bobs wife, was taken in 2005 on Weymouth beach just after a big wave went over her feet. Journalling can be done on the computer and printed out and put onto a layout or it can be handwritten, remember that your handwriting is a part of you. It can be hidden behind a photo with a tab to pull out and read, or at the very least write on the back of your layouts all the details you can about the content of the photographs. Your great grandchildren will be so pleased that you did.
Albums come in 3 basic sizes 12x12 inch 8x8 and 6x6 the Americans use 8x11 too which is a little bigger than A4. 12x12 is probably the most popular size and most scrapbook papers come in this size too.
Albums come with pages inside, they are plastic sleeves that hold 2 layouts back to back, you can buy extra sleeves (pages) once you have filled the ones supplied.
For a first basic layout I would reccomend 2-3 photo's, 2 sheets of patterned paper (aka. pp) and a sheet of cardstock (aka. cs) choose them to compliment your photos, or a theme etc. Using one of the pp as a background cut or tear the other piece of pp and place it onto the background so that you're happy with it.
Use the cs to mat the photo's. Do this by glueing the BACK of the photo and placing it on the cs and cutting around it to give it a frame, I always put my photo's into the corner of the cs so that I only have to cut round 2 edges.
Place your photos onto the layout and play around with everything until you are happy with the look. Other embellishments can be placed onto the layout to decorate it, ie. ribbons and fibres (string fluffy wool etc.) or metal bits, use some stick on lettering to give your layout a title and some journalling. And there you are a layout.
I would advise you to buy a couple of magazines which often have beginners guides in them as well as loads of web address of places to buy stuff from. Ebay is great too. If anyone wants the address of a couple of good ones pm me and I'll let you have them.
A good site to look at (hope Toni doesn't mind me posting this) is www.ukscrappers.co.uk it's a site for people who scrap and has loads of information as well as a gallery of loads of work that people have done, some of mine are on there somewhere. It also has a forum so you can ask questions etc. bit like on here.
Hope that helps, let me know if there's anything you want to know, feel free to look at the stuff in the gallery that I've done and copy if you like (scraplift)
Next lesson in the chat room next Thursday 9pm. Don't be late lol.

Thanks for that Kate, a pretty comprehensive guide ther I reckon! I ahve millions of photos in albums but since getting the ditital camera I tend to put them into powerpoint shows etc so we can watch them on the computer. Dh bought be a thing so I can burn them onto dvd's but i am still trying to get my head around that. I just like the idea of having something to touch and hold, that tells a story too. I have quite a few bits such as backing papers and card as I have recently started making cards, just for a hobbie really, but will get my bottom off to lakeland and Hobbicraft and get some album pages - i could right dh a list as my birthday is coming up**5**

Scrapbooking front-page is something I am planning to do using my polymer clay but Katie, this is where you come in............where can I buy scrapbooks with the front cover blank?
Thanks!

Hi, sorry only just seen this, you can buy fairly plain scrapbooks, Making Memories make one that has a window in the front so you can add your own photo so you could probably add polymer clay things to that. The other option is to make one yourself. You could look on the docrafts website as they do some albums too.
Do you actually want to stick pieces to the front of it as you would have to be careful that they didn't come off. Do you want a 12"x12" one or smaller, I make 8x8 and smaller but it really depends on the sort of thing you want a 6x6 is £8 and an 8x8 £10 and it could be as plain as you wanted it to be on the front cover. Have a scout around if you put scrapbook into google it should come up with dozens of sites that do albums.

Thanks Katie - what I may look at getting is just some scrapbook paper to do a trial run.
I bought a mini scrapbook from e-bay and I have made some polymer clay A B C boxes, so I'll sand them down andhave a go at sticking them on.
My friend is due a baby in July and my cousin is due a baby in September and I think it would be a nice gift.
I do have a "recipe" to follow from Emma Ralph's polymer clay book. I'll post the finished article when it is done and you can let me know what you think.
I love your stuff Katie, you make it looks so easy!

Oh thanks Trinity that's really nice of you to say so. I just love doing it which I think is the important thing. I've been teaching using Alchohol inks tonight which is another fun thing to do and quite messy, I have multicoloured fingers now. lol.
The boxes sound lovely, I'd love to see then when they're finished.
Love Kate
