Hi all

I'm looking to buy a household pet. My only child Tamzin has just turned 2 so I would like something that would not cause to many problems in the home. I'm not too sure if a dog or cat will be out of the question, any advice please?

Cheers

Lisa

Erm ... sorry not very good with things like this, we have a tortoise ! she's really easy to look after ! There are some other ladies who are great with the animal things and I am sure they will be along to help out. Lemon x

We had 2 cats before our boys came along (still have them!) and when ds2 was about 18 months old (3 years ago) we got 2 puppies. The dogs love the boys and the boys love them. They've all kind of grown up together. We also now have fish and a hamster. In the end it's what you think your dd will be OK with though

guinea pigs are geat pets for small children, but I agree fish are probably the easiest ones to keep and the cheapest

My first pet was a goldfish - we then worked up to a hamster and a cat!

I used to want a dog, though ... then a pony, lol.

we have fish! the children can help look after them and stuff but they dont smell, need walking or expensive vet bills and when they die we go choose more from the fish shop!!

wouldn't get a kitten with a child that young but some cats would be fine. We got ours from the Cat Protection League when my child was 3. They assured me she would make a good family cat and they were right - even when little friends pulled her tail she has never scrammed just run away and hidden. They would have taken her back if there were any serious problems but she is still a much loved memebr of the family. I was attacked by a dog when small and my niece's husband had his arm ripped open protecting their baby, I'd never risk a dog with a young child.

Rabbits aren't good pets for young children. They soon get too big to be held and they can scratch quite badly as they struggle to get down/ back to their hutch. They are sociable creatures and the RSPCA recommends you have 2 with a hutch 6 foot by 2 feet - not cheap.

Maybe leave it until the child is a little older?
