Travelling with Tots!

Travelling with youngsters need not be a trauma. Vicki Hill from www.rewardboard.co.uk explains how to take the stress out of travelling during the holiday period.

We all look forward to our holidays but the long flights and journeys can be a nightmare for parents. In order to ensure that the travelling doesn’t cause you a headache you need to plan well in advance! The usual reasons that children become fractious on journeys is tiredness, boredom or hunger! If you plan in advance you can avoid all three and have a pleasant journey both inward and outward bound.

Ensure that you take your quota of hand luggage with you if you are flying. You will need to pack food and drink so that you can keep your child’s hunger pangs at bay. Make sure that you pack lots of little snacks that you can access quickly and easily should the nibbles emerge! Remember that flying causes dehydration so ensure that you have a supply of bottled water at the ready.

If your child is still young enough to use a pushchair, arrange to keep it until the last minute at the airport. Make sure you pack any special items your child needs to sleep peacefully such as special blankets, cuddly toys etc.

A bag of tricks is essential to survive a long journey. Pack lots of different activities to ensure that your child is kept stimulated during the journey. If you are travelling by car make sure that you have some CDs of children’s songs handy. You can also devise spotting games such as I spy, or get each person to choose a different coloured car to spot and see who scores the most!

You can also pack goodies such as a colouring book, a note pad and pencil crayons. These will keep youngsters occupied throughout the journey. Sticker books work well and are cheap, visit your local WH Smith for a good selection featuring the latest TV characters.

Have a rummage through your child’s bedroom and select small toys that would easily fit in a rucksack. Alternate the toys as and when required and encourage your child to engage in role play to keep them entertained. I have also packed a tub of playdough in the past on long aircraft flights/boat journeys. Encourage your child to make their name with the playdough or to make playdough snakes!

It is also a good idea to pack different items for the return journey, that way your child will be interested in what you have to offer! Consider buying a new small toy for the inward and outward journey. Wrap it up in coloured paper and give it to your child as a special treat, new toys always keep them busy for a little longer!

Remember to reward your child’s good behaviour. Long journeys are difficult for youngsters. Invest in a packet of reward coins from www.rewardboard.co.uk They are easy to carry around while on holiday and are an excellent tool for rewarding good behaviour.
