Tantrum Top Tips

Tempers, Tantrums and Toddlers! by Vicki Hill

Parenting a toddler can be a difficult and demanding job.  Follow these top tips to manage temper tantrums more easily.

1.     If you feel yourself becoming stressed by the situation and it is safe to do so then walk away from your toddler into another room and count to 10.

2.     If there is somebody else available to take over then ask for help

3.     Remember there is no point reasoning with a toddler – they have not yet developed reasoning skills!

4.      Try distracting your toddler before the tantrum escalates.  Introduce something different into the conversation such as “Oh look at that cat outside”

5.     One of the most effective ways of dealing with tantrums is to ignore the behaviour.  Toddlers love being the centre of attention.  It may be enough to withdraw eye contact from your child and to state “I’m not looking at you until you stop kicking, screaming or whatever behaviour they are exhibiting”  Make sure that you are specific so that your child understands exactly what they have to do in order to gain your attention.

6.  It is vital that your child understands that they do gain your attention when they are complying.  Give your child lots of positive verbal praise “I love the way you are sitting eating your dinner, what a good girl” and so on.  You may wish to introduce a reward chart or stickers at this age to show your child how pleased you are with their behaviour.  Children respond positively to praise and will quickly learn that the way to get your attention is to comply rather than to tantrum.

7.  If toddler tantrums are getting you down remember that you are not alone, you may gain support through talking to other parents and your health visitor.
