The age of drivers looking to invest in car insurance can vary great deal - from teenagers who have just passed their test, to pensioners who might continue to drive well into their twilight years. However, age is one of the most influential factors in generating the price of a car insurance quote. Younger drivers are generally regarded as being less experienced on the road, and therefore statistically more likely to be involved in an accident. Some young people may find that they are lucky enough to be in a position to afford a new or expensive vehicle. However, even if they are able to afford the cost of vehicle itself, they may not be able to cover the high insurance premiums which can sometimes come with with insuring such cars. As younger and new drivers are also statistically considered to be 'high risk' customers, they will often also find that they suffer from higher premium rates as a result of their age or lack of experience behind the wheel. Insurers are no longer legally allowed to discriminate on as many platforms as they have been able to in the past. For example, providers will be required to subscribe to gender-neutral insurance pricing laws, which take effect as of the 21st December 2012. Other providers, often known as 'green insurers' may offer more reasonable insurance rates to those who drive hybrid or electric cars. However, age remains one factor which is generally used by most insurance companies when looking generating a policy quote for a particular driver. Fortunately, there are a few things which older and younger drivers might do in order to help achieve a more reasonable premium rate. One thing which many drivers choose to do is complete the Pass Plus course. Not only does this give new drivers more experience, but it can help to reassure insurers that a driver of any age is less of a risk on the road than the statistics would suggest, a great technique if you're wanting to get Aviva car insurance coverage for slightly less, and pick up new driving skills along the way. Many younger drivers might think it easier to be added as a second driver to their parents' insurance policy. However, even if the main driver is statistically considered to be a safe driver, the addition of a teenager with less than a year's driving experience can more than double the cost of their premium. Instead, it can be more beneficial for a young driver to take out their own policy, to which they can then add a more mature driver in order to lower the cost of the cover. Whilst there is little you can do to change your age or experience, there are certainly a number of points which it is worth considering by being aware of whether or not your age puts you within a high risk insurance bracket. |
