Autumn Party Tips from Crafty Kidz

Ritu Valecha Sood, founder of Crafty Kidz, has organised thousands of children’s birthday parties. Here she shares her tips on how to keep a crowd of kids happy at an autumn birthday party, when you can’t always let the excitement spill into the garden.

Crafty Kidz Party Planner - for a fabulous, memorable and fun party…

Always include the birthday child in making plans for the party.

Eight weeks before

  • Decide on the theme, date and time for the party.

  • You could theme the party around fireworks, Halloween, or decorate with autumn leaves and conkers.

  • Book outside venues/entertainers if necessary (you may need to book further in advance for popular choices).

Four weeks before

  • Make a list of party guests. Autumn parties will need an indoors alternative at least, so you may need to limit the number of guests.

  • Decide how long your party will last - two to two and a half hours is plenty.

  • Write invitations. Include your telephone number for RSVP’s and a deadline for replying.

Three – Two weeks before

  • Hand out or post invitations. For an autumn theme, how about pasting the party details onto a leaf, or decoraste the invitations with leaf prints.

  • Buy, hire or start making any props and costumes.

  • Buy small prizes and gifts

  • Decide on the birthday cake. How about decorating a round cake as a pumpkin face?

  • Choose the food. For something different, how about warming Autumnal food like baked potatoes and bangers. Keep it simple, have small portions and consider any allergies.

One week before

·         Phone any guests who haven’t replied.

·         Buy drink, candles and non-perishable party food. With evenings drawing in, atmospheric lighting can really add to a party. A crafty activity could be either making pumpkin candle holders, or add stickers and a wire handle to a glass jar and pop a night light in for guests as they leave.

·         Buy or record music. With musical games, have a pre-recorded tape or cd prepared, so there are no gaps as the tracks change.

·         Buy party bag fillers or party bags

On the day

  • Get the birthday child to help with decorating or, if they are too young to help, ask someone to take them out for a few hours so you can work faster!

  • Decorate home or venue.

  • Gather any props you will need for the games and other activities planned.

  • Prepare food.

Have a running order to ensure the party progresses smoothly and to avoid those ‘what shall we do next’ moments. Put a time limit on some activities and alternate competitive and non-competitive games. Try to arrange it so that everyone wins a small prize.
