Toxins in Baby and Child Care Products | Toxins in Baby and Child Care Products |

Parenting is one of the most important jobs you will ever do and it is undoubtedly one of the most difficult, too. Your natural instinct is to protect your child from any danger, or potential danger, in the world around them. But, a potential danger which may surprise you, comes from certain ingredients in the products we use on ourselves and our children for personal hygiene, every day. Incredibly, this has been known about for over 20 years by both toxicologists and the manufacturers, themselves. Many toxicologists have repeatedly shown their evidence to governments around the world with very little action being taken. Large companies have the resources to dispute any evidence that these independent scientists produce. You only have to remember how, for decades, tobacco companies managed to discredit any studies showing tobacco to be harmful, even though their own scientists had found the same evidence, but had been threatened to keep quiet. Somehow, as parents, we have this idealistic notion that no company would be allowed to sell products for babies and children that had the potential to cause health problems, even cancer in the long term. The clever advertising reinforces this belief and when health practitioners also endorse these products, we feel even more reassured. But, these same health practitioners often know no more than you about the ingredients in toiletries. They, too, use them on their own children because they have been led to believe that they are safe. The ingredients are "allowed" because manufacturers do not have to prove them to be safe. Ingredients only have to be proven to be “unsafe” before they must be withdrawn and manufacturers rely on a limited list of banned chemicals. What is more disturbing, though, is the fact that little testing has been done on the combination of chemicals in these products. Individual chemicals may be harmless but put together, a reaction may occur which has the potential to do harm. As a health practitioner, myself, I spent many months checking out specific ingredients to find the evidence for their potential harm and I was shocked by what I discovered. Very few ingredients have even been tested but from those that have, 125 still being used in personal care products are suspected of causing cancer, birth defects or other serious health problems. Another discovery was that some of the common ingredients used in toiletries mimic oestrogen. As a large number of cancers are fed by oestrogen, it is believed that the huge rise in cancer rates may be attributed, in part, by the long-term exposure to these chemicals. Take a look at the list of ingredients in your child’s toiletries for the following common chemicals: Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, Sodium Laureth Sulphate, Propylene Glycol, D.E.A, T.E.A and M.E.A, Talc, or Sodium Fluoride. If any of them are mentioned, you may, unknowingly, be risking their health. Our children trust us to make safe choices for them and our responsibility as parents is to ensure that we do so. But, finding reliable sources of information can be extremely difficult. Through my research, I have collected a number of articles from independent sources which have helped me to understand which chemicals to avoid for my own children. These articles have now been made available to everyone and can be found at www.healthychoices.ukhq.co.uk/Familycare/common_toxins.html Thankfully, through increasing public awareness, there are companies who are addressing these findings and producing toiletries with toxin-free ingredients. And hopefully, as more parents support these companies, the larger manufacturers will take notice and stop using potentially harmful ingredients in the baby and child care products that they make.
